The author is using this statement formally to introduce Ishbosheth as a participant in the story. Your language may have its own way of introducing participants that you can use in your translation. The author is speaking as if the people of Judah had positioned themselves physically behind David. He means that they were loyal to him as their king. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [were loyal to David as their king]
