UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) the gods of Damascus

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_sacrificed to,gods Dammeseq the,defeated in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_said that/for/because/then/when gods kings ʼArām they helped DOM,them to/for=them sacrifice and,help,me and,they they_were to=him/it to,downfall,him and=to/for=all Yisrael )

The Syrians believed Damascus to be the city where their gods dwelt, much like Yahweh dwelt in Jerusalem. Alternate translation: “the gods whom the Syrians worshiped in Damascus”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) gods that had defeated him

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_sacrificed to,gods Dammeseq the,defeated in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_said that/for/because/then/when gods kings ʼArām they helped DOM,them to/for=them sacrifice and,help,me and,they they_were to=him/it to,downfall,him and=to/for=all Yisrael )

This expresses Ahaz’s opinion. Because the Syrians had defeated him and his army, Ahaz attributed his defeat to the gods whom the Syrians worshiped. Alternate translation: “gods whom he believed had enabled the Syrian army to defeat him”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) they were the ruin of him and of all Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_sacrificed to,gods Dammeseq the,defeated in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_said that/for/because/then/when gods kings ʼArām they helped DOM,them to/for=them sacrifice and,help,me and,they they_were to=him/it to,downfall,him and=to/for=all Yisrael )

The word “ruin” can be translated with a verb. Alternate translation: “those gods ruined him and all Israel”

(Occurrence 0) all Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_sacrificed to,gods Dammeseq the,defeated in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_said that/for/because/then/when gods kings ʼArām they helped DOM,them to/for=them sacrifice and,help,me and,they they_were to=him/it to,downfall,him and=to/for=all Yisrael )

Here “Israel” represents the southern kingdom of Judah.
