TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:1-19 Jeremiah’s call is presented as a conversation; God spoke as a king to Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s objections show that he understood himself clearly. God responded to his objections with promises and compelling visions.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-ordinal

(Occurrence 0) the eleventh

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

The word “eleventh” is the ordinal form of “11.”

(Occurrence 0) It also came

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

Alternate translation: “The word of Yahweh also came”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

Here “in the days of” is an idiom that refers to the time when a king reigned. Alternate translation: “when Johoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah”

Note 3 topic: translate-hebrewmonths

(Occurrence 0) the fifth month

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

This is the fifth month of the Hebrew calendar. It is during the last part of July and the first part of August on Western calendars. (See also: translate-ordinal)

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) of Zedekiah

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

This refers to the rule of Zedekiah. This can be stated explicitly. Alternate translation: “of the reign of Zedekiah”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) when the people of Jerusalem were taken away as prisoners

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in/on/at/with,days Yehoyakim son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until end one_of teen year of,Zedekiah son_of Yʼoshiyyāh/(Josiah) king Yehuda until went_into_exile Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,month the,fifth )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. It can be stated clearly that they were taken to Babylon. Alternate translation: “when the army of Babylon took the people of Jerusalem away as prisoners” or “when the army of Babylon took the people of Jerusalem as prisoners to Babylon” (See also: figs-explicit)
