TSNTyndale Study Notes:

42:13-22 Jeremiah had already prophesied Egypt’s destiny; it would be destroyed by the Babylonians (46:2-26). This remnant of Judah would walk into the path of the Lord’s judgment if they continued on to Egypt.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) now

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now to_be_sure you_all_be_sure that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,sword in/on/at/with,famine and,in/on/at/with,plague die in/on/at/with,place which/who desire to,go to,settle there )

The word “now” does not mean “at this moment,” but is used to draw attention to the important point that follows.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) you will die by sword

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now to_be_sure you_all_be_sure that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,sword in/on/at/with,famine and,in/on/at/with,plague die in/on/at/with,place which/who desire to,go to,settle there )

Here “sword” represents war. Alternate translation: “you will die in warfare”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) in the place where you desired to go to live

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now to_be_sure you_all_be_sure that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,sword in/on/at/with,famine and,in/on/at/with,plague die in/on/at/with,place which/who desire to,go to,settle there )

They desired to live in Egypt. This can be stated explicitly. Alternate translation: “in Egypt, where you thought you would be safe”
