TSNTyndale Study Notes:

42:5-6 Perhaps these people sensed that Jeremiah doubted their sincerity. They responded by making a solemn oath: They committed to obey the Lord’s instructions and to submit to punishment if they failed to keep the oath. They were confident that the Lord’s answer would be what they wanted to hear.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

(Occurrence 0) Whether it is good or if it is bad

(Some words not found in UHB: if good and=if bad in/on/at/with,voice YHWH God,our which/who we sending DOM,you to=him/it obey so_that which/who go_well to/for=us that/for/because/then/when obey in/on/at/with,voice YHWH God,our )

The people mention both extremes to emphasize that they will obey no matter what Yahweh’s answer is. Alternate translation: “Whatever he answers”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) the voice of Yahweh our God

(Some words not found in UHB: if good and=if bad in/on/at/with,voice YHWH God,our which/who we sending DOM,you to=him/it obey so_that which/who go_well to/for=us that/for/because/then/when obey in/on/at/with,voice YHWH God,our )

Here “voice” represents what Yahweh says. Alternate translation: “what Yahweh our God says” or “we will obey Yahweh our God”
