USTSo, tell the Levites that they must dedicate the best portion from everything that the Israelites give them. When they do that, I will consider it to be like when farmers dedicate grain that they have harvested or grape juice that they have produced.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם בַּהֲרִֽימְכֶ֤ם אֶת חֶלְבּוֹ֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

and,you_will_say to,them when,you,offer_up DOM best_of,its from=him/it

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [And you shall say to them that when they lift up its fat from it]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-condition-fact

בַּהֲרִֽימְכֶ֤ם אֶת חֶלְבּוֹ֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

when,you,offer_up DOM best_of,its from=him/it

Yahweh is speaking as if the Levites setting apart the best portion were a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it will certainly happen. If your language does not state something as a condition if it is certain or true, or if your readers might think that what Yahweh is saying is uncertain, then you could translate this as a confident statement. Alternate translation: [Because you lift up its fat from it]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

אֶת חֶלְבּוֹ֙

DOM best_of,its

Here, its fat represents the best or choicest portion. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [the best of it]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְנֶחְשַׁב֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם

and,it_will_be_reckoned to,Levites

The expression it shall be reckoned to the Levites is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [then it will count for the Levites]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְנֶחְשַׁב֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם כִּתְבוּאַ֥ת גֹּ֖רֶן וְכִתְבוּאַ֥ת יָֽקֶב

and,it_will_be_reckoned to,Levites like_[the],produce_of threshing_floor and,like_[the],produce_of winepress

Here Yahweh could mean that: (1) when the Levites give a tenth of what they receive from the rest of the Israelites, the same rules and principles apply as when Israelite farmers give a tenth of their grain or grape juice. In other words, even though the Levites do not grow their own food, they must give a tenth of the food they receive to Yahweh, just as the farmers do. Alternate translation: [then what you have dedicated will be reckoned to you Levites just as it is reckoned to farmers who dedicate the produce of a threshing floor or the produce of a winepress] (2) when the Levites give a tenth of what they receive from the rest of the Israelites, they may eat the rest of it as if they grew it themselves. Alternate translation: [then the rest of what you have received will be reckoned to you Levites as if you had produced it with your own threshing floors and winepresses]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

כִּתְבוּאַ֥ת גֹּ֖רֶן וְכִתְבוּאַ֥ת יָֽקֶב

like_[the],produce_of threshing_floor and,like_[the],produce_of winepress

The point of this comparison is that just as produce of a threshing floor and produce of a winepress belong fully to the farmer, so the remaining tithe belongs fully to the Levites. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [as fully their own as a farmer’s grain and wine]
