BrTrAnd Balaam said to Balac, Stand by thy sacrifice, and I will go and see if God [fn]will appear to me and meet me, and the word which he shall shew me, I will report to thee. And Balac stood by his sacrifice.

ULTAnd Balaam said to Balak, “Station yourself beside your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps Yahweh will be met to meet me, and I will declare to you the word of what he shows me.” And he went to a bare high place.

USTThen Balaam said to Balak, “You stand here close to your burned offerings, and I will go and ask Yahweh if he has something else to tell me. Then I will tell you what he says to me.”

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

23:1-30 As a diviner, Balaam performed rituals to interpret omens and ascertain Israel’s future (cp. 23:23; 24:1). Balak had summoned him to pronounce imprecations, but God repeatedly prohibited him from doing so.
• It is possible that these sacrifices were connected with the practice of extispicy—the examination of animal livers or other organs for an omen concerning the future. According to ancient Near Eastern texts, this form of fortune-telling was a widely practiced and highly developed art. Such practices were banned from Israel (see Deut 18:9-14; cp. Ezek 21:21).
