First Timothy
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of {Christ[fn] Jesus}[fn] our hope, 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God {the}[fn] Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach different doctrine, 4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which promote disputes rather than God's administration in faith.
5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. 6 Some have swerved from these and have turned aside to fruitless discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
8 We know, however, that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this, that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their father and mother, for murderers of men, 10 for the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.
12 I am grateful to the one who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the foremost. 16 But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, {Christ Jesus}[fn] might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.
17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only {wise}[fn] God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18 This command I entrust to you, child Timothy, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
2 Therefore, I urge first of all that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity.
3 [[For]][fn] This is good and acceptable in the sight of our Savior God, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time.
7 For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle - I am telling the truth [[in Christ]],[fn] I am not lying - a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 Therefore, I desire that men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger and argument.
9 Likewise, [also][fn] women should adorn themselves in modest attire, with respect and self-control, not with braids {and}[fn] gold or pearls or expensive clothing, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness, through good works.
11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.
12 But I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness.
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, being deceived, fell into transgression.
15 But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
3 The word is trustworthy. If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, they desire a noble task. 2 Therefore, an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent, [[not greedy for gain]][fn] but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
4 They must manage their own household well, with all dignity keeping their children submissive
5 But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God? 6 Not a recent convert, lest they become conceited and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover, one must also have a good reputation with those outside, so as not to fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.
8 Likewise, deacons should be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10 And let these also first be tested, then let them serve, being without accusation.
11 Likewise, women should be dignified, not slanderous, sober-minded, faithful in all things.
12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.
13 For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
14 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you soon; 15 but if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
16 And without a doubt, the mystery of godliness is great: {who}[fn] was revealed in the flesh, was justified in the spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in the world, was taken up in glory.
4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of {Christ Jesus},[fn] being nourished in the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed; 7 but the profane ones and silly myths,[fn] reject.
8 For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.
10 For this reason we [[both]][fn] labor and {strive},[fn] because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the savior of all men, most of all, of the faithful.
11 Command these things and teach them.
12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but become an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [[in spirit,]][fn] in faith, in purity.
13 Until I come, pay attention to the reading, the exhortation, the teaching.
14 Do not neglect the gift within you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the elders.
15 Meditate on these things, immerse yourself in them, so that your progress may be evident to all.
16 Pay attention to yourself and to the teaching; persist in it, for by doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
5 Do not rebuke an older man, but encourage him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.
3 Honor widows who are truly widows.
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is [[good and]][fn] acceptable in the sight of God.
5 Now she who is truly a widow, and left alone, puts her hope in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, 6 but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.
7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be {blameless}[fn] above reproach.
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one husband, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
11 But refuse younger widows; for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ,[fn] they want to marry 12 and incur judgment because they have set aside their first faith;
13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.
14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach; 15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan.
16 If any believing {woman}[fn] has relatives who are widows, let her assist them, and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are truly widows.
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. 18 For the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”[fn]
19 Do not accept an accusation against an elder, except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.
20 Rebuke those who sin in the presence of all, so that the rest may also have fear.
21 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and {Christ Jesus}[fn] and the chosen angels, that you keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.
22 Do not quickly lay hands on anyone, nor participate in others' sins; keep yourself pure.
23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24 The sins of some men are clearly evident, leading to judgment, but for others, they appear later. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and those [[that are]][fn] otherwise cannot be hidden.
6 All who are under the yoke as slaves, let them consider their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters should not disrespect them because they are brothers, but rather they should serve them, because those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.
Teach and encourage these things. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, 4 he has become conceited, understanding nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.[fn] Withdraw from such people.”[fn]
6 But there is great gain in godliness with contentment; 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and [[it is clear]][fn] we cannot take anything out of it.
8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a trap and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and you confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I charge [you] in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which, at the proper time, the blessed and only Sovereign will show, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
17 Instruct those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on [[the living]][fn] God, to the one providing us with all things richly for enjoyment. 18 They should do good, be rich in good works, be generous and ready to share, 19 storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that is {truly}[fn] life.
20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you, turning away from the profane empty chatter and contradictions of falsely named knowledge, 21 which some professing have missed the mark concerning the faith.
Grace be with you. [[Amen]][fn]
