Revelation of John[fn]
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ,[fn] which God gave to him, to show his {servants}[fn] what must soon take place; and he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, as much as he saw.
3 Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear {the}[fn] {words}[fn] of this prophecy and keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
4 John, to the seven churches in Asia: Grace to you and peace from {the one}[fn] who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits that are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth;
To the one {loving}[fn] us and {to the one who set [us][fn] free}[fn] from [our][fn] sins by his blood, 6 and[fn] he has made {us}[fn] {a kingdom, priests}[fn] to his God and Father; to him be glory and dominion forever [and ever].[fn] Amen.
7 Behold, he is coming {with}[fn] the clouds,[fn] and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Yes, amen.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, [[the Beginning and the End]]”[fn] says the Lord God,[fn] “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
9 I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance {in}[fn] [[Christ]][fn] {Jesus},[fn] was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and [[for]][fn] the testimony of Jesus [[Christ]].[fn]
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, “[[I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last and]][fn] What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches [[in Asia]]:[fn] to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis,[fn] to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
12 And [[there]][fn] I turned to see the voice that {was speaking}[fn] with me, and having turned I saw seven golden lampstands 13 and in the midst of the [[seven]][fn] lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 His head and his hair were white like white wool, like snow, and his eyes were like a flame of fire; 15 and his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace; and his voice was like the sound of many waters. 16 He had in his right hand seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp, double-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in its strength.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead, and he placed his right hand on me, saying [[to me]],[fn] “[Do not be afraid;][fn] I am the {first}[fn] and the last, 18 and the living one — and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever, and I have the keys of {death and of Hades}.[fn] [[Amen.]][fn] 19 [Therefore],[fn] write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these.
20 “The mystery of the seven stars which you saw {on}[fn] my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands [[which you saw]][fn] are the seven churches.”
2 To the angel of the church {in}[fn] Ephesus write: “These things says the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands:
2 “I know your works, {the}[fn] labor, and your endurance, and that you cannot bear evil ones, and you have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and have found them to be false; 3 and you have endurance [[and patience,]][fn] [[and have borne all tribulations]][fn] and have labored for my name's sake, and you {have not grown weary}.[fn]
4 “But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to you [[quickly]][fn] and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 But this you have, that you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
7 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the [[seven]][fn] churches. To the one who overcomes, I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in [[the midst of]][fn] the paradise of [[my]][fn] God.”
8 And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: “These things says the {first}[fn] and the last, who was dead and came to life:
9 “I know [[your works and]][fn] your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the blasphemy[fn] {from}[fn] those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold [[indeed]],[fn] the devil is about to throw [[some of]][fn] you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
11 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
“The one who conquers[fn] will not be harmed by the second death.”
12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: “These things says the one who has the sharp, double-edged sword:
13 “I know [[your works and]][fn] where you dwell, where Satan's throne is, and you hold fast to my name, and did not deny {my}[fn] faith [even][fn] in the days of Antipas {my witness, my faithful one},[fn] who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
14 But I have this against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught [Balak][fn] to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat food sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.[fn] 15 So you also have those who hold the doctrine of [the][fn] Nicolaitans {in the same way}.[fn]
16 Repent [therefore];[fn] or else I will come to you quickly and will make war against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
“To the one who conquers, I will give [to him][fn] [[to eat]][fn] some of the hidden manna, and [I will give him][fn] a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.”
18 And to the angel [of the church][fn] in Thyatira write: “These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass:
19 “I know your works, your love, your faith, [your service,][fn] and your endurance, [[and]][fn] your last works are more than the first.
20 But I have this against you, that you {have left}[fn] {the}[fn] woman Jezebel, who {calls herself}[fn] a prophetess and teaches and leads my servants astray to commit sexual immorality[fn] and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time to repent [, and she does not want to repent][fn] of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I am throwing her into a bed,[fn] and those committing adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent from {her}[fn] works. 23 And I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am the one who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
24 But I say to {the rest of you}[fn] in Thyatira, those who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things[fn] of Satan (as they say), I will not put upon you any other burden. 25 However, what you have, hold on to until I come.
26 “And the one who conquers, and keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 And he will shepherd them with an iron rod, as the ceramic vessels {are shattered},[fn] 28 just as I also have received from my Father; and I will give him the morning star.
29 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
3 And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: “These things says the one who has the [seven][fn] spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your deeds, that you have {a}[fn] name that you live, and you are dead.
2 Be alert and strengthen the remaining things which {are about to die};[fn] for I have not found your works complete in the sight of [my][fn] God.
3 “Remember, [therefore,][fn] how you have received and heard, and keep it, and repent. If, therefore, you do not watch, I will come [[upon you]][fn] like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.
4 “[But][fn] you [[also]][fn] have a few names in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
5 “The one who conquers[fn] {thus}[fn] shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out their name from the Book of Life; but I will confess their name before my Father and before his angels.
6 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches”
7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: “These things says the Holy One, the True One, the one who has the key of David, the one who opens and no one will shut, {and shuts}[fn] and no one opens:
8 “I know your works, behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut — for you have little strength and you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie —indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.
10 Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
11 “[[Behold]][fn] I am coming quickly. Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.
12 “The one who conquers, I will make them a pillar in the temple of my God, and they shall not go out [anymore].[fn] I will write [on him][fn] the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the New Jerusalem, {descending}[fn] from heaven from my God, and {my}[fn] new name.
13 Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
14 And to the angel of the church {in}[fn] Laodicea write: “These things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning[fn] of the {creation}[fn] of God:
15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. [I wish that you were cold or hot.][fn] 16 Thus, because you are lukewarm, and {neither}[fn] {hot nor cold},[fn] I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say [that],[fn] ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need {nothing},’[fn] and you do not know that you are wretched and pitiable and poor and blind and naked;
18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed, and {apply ointment to your eyes}[fn] so that you may see.
19 “As many as I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore, be {zealous}[fn] and repent.
20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [also][fn] I will come in to them and dine with them, and they with me.
21 “To the one who conquers I will grant to sit with me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 “Let the one who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
4 After these things, I saw, and behold, a door {was opened}[fn] in heaven, and the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place.”
After these things 2 [[and]][fn] immediately I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one seated on the throne, 3 [and the one seated was][fn] like the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and a rainbow around the throne, like the appearance of {an emerald}.[fn]
4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones [[I saw]][fn] twenty-four elders seated, clothed in white garments, and [[they had]][fn] on their heads golden crowns.
5 And from {the}[fn] throne proceed flashes of lightning, voices, and peals of thunder, and seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal.
In the midst of the throne and around the throne were four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.
7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.
8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, {full}[fn] of eyes around and within, and they do not rest day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”
9 And when the creatures give [glory and][fn] honor and thanks to the one seated on the throne, the one who lives forever and ever, [[amen,]][fn] 10 the twenty-four elders [[also]][fn] will fall down before the one seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever, [[amen,]][fn] and they will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,[fn] [[the Holy One,]][fn] to receive glory, honor, and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed[fn] and were created.”
5 And I saw on the right hand of the one seated on the throne a {a book[fn] written inside and {on the back},[fn] sealed with seven seals}.[fn]
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming {in}[fn] a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?” 3 And no one was able in heaven [[above]][fn] or on the earth [or under the earth][fn] to open the book or to look at it. 4 [And][fn] {they}[fn] wept greatly, because no one was found worthy to open the book [[and read]][fn] or to look at it.
5 And one of the elders says to me, “Do not weep, behold, the lion from the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has overcome[fn] {to open}[fn] the book and [[loose]][fn] its seven seals.”
6 And [[behold]][fn] I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the [seven][fn] spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he came and took [[the book]][fn] from the right hand of the one seated on the throne.
8 And when he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sing a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the book and to open its seals, because you were slain and with {the}[fn] blood you purchased for God men from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made {them}[fn] {a kingdom}[fn] and priests [to our God],[fn] and {they}[fn] shall reign on the earth.”
11 And I saw, and I heard [[as]][fn] the voice of many angels {around} the throne and the living creatures and the elders, and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth [and under the earth][fn] and [[what is]][fn] in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! Amen”
14 And the four living creatures {said},[fn] “Amen.” And the [[twenty-four]][fn] elders fell down and worshiped [[him who lives for ever and ever]].[fn]
6 And I saw {when}[fn] the Lamb opened one of the {seven seals,}[fn] and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder [[saying]],[fn] “Come [[and see]].”[fn]
2 [And I saw,][fn] and behold, a white horse, and the one seated on it had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to {conquer}.[fn]
3 And when he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come [[and see]].”[fn] 4 And another horse, fiery red, went out, and to the one seated on it was given [to him][fn] to take peace from the earth, [and][fn] that they {will}[fn] slaughter one another, and a great sword was given to him.
5 And when he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come [[and see]].”[fn] And [I saw, and][fn] behold, a black horse, and the one seated on it had a scale in his hand. 6 And I heard [something like][fn] a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and the wine.”
7 And when he opened the fourth seal, I heard [the voice of][fn] the fourth living creature saying, “Come [[and see]].”[fn] 8 And [I saw,][fn] [and behold,][fn] a pale horse, and the name of the one seated on it was Death, and Hades followed [with][fn] him.
And authority was given to {them}[fn] over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with death and by the beasts of the earth.
9 And when the [fifth][fn] seal was opened, I saw beneath the altar the souls of {those}[fn] who had been slain because of the word of God and [because of][fn] the testimony they held [[of the Lamb]].[fn]
10 And they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will you not judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 And a white robe was given to each of them, and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both their fellow servants and their brothers, who were about to be killed [[by them]][fn] as they were, should be complete.
12 And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and [[behold]][fn] there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the [whole][fn] moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of {heaven}[fn] fell to the earth, as a fig tree {drops}[fn] its figs when shaken by a great wind. 14 And [the][fn] heaven receded like a book[fn] being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.
15 And the kings of the earth, the great men, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave [and free man][fn] hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 and they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of {their}[fn] wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
7 [[And]][fn] After {this}[fn] I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind would blow [on the earth][fn] neither on the sea or on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel {ascending}[fn] from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God; and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”
4 [And I heard the number of those who were sealed,][fn] One hundred [[and]][fn] forty-four thousand, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
5 From the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand [[were sealed]],[fn] 6 from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand [[were sealed]],[fn] 7 from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand,[fn] from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand [[were sealed]],[fn] 8 from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, from the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed [[were sealed]].[fn]
9 After these things I looked, [and behold,][fn] a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing {before}[fn] the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they {cry}[fn] out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation to our God [who sits][fn] on the throne [[of our God]],[fn] and to the Lamb.”
11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on {their faces}[fn] before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen, blessing and glory [and wisdom][fn] and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever. [Amen.]”[fn]
13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?” 14 And I said to him, “{My lord},[fn] you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones {who come}[fn] out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made [them][fn] white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over[fn] them.
16 They will not hunger [anymore][fn] nor thirst anymore, nor will the sun fall on them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and {will guide}[fn] them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
8 And when he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.
3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer, and much incense was given to him, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. 5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire from the altar, and cast it onto the earth, and there were thunders, and voices, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
6 And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared {them}[fn] to sound them.
7 And the first [[angel]][fn] sounded, and there was hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was cast upon the earth, [and a third part of the earth was burnt up,][fn] and a third part of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
8 And the second [angel][fn] sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning [with fire][fn] was cast into the sea, and a third part of the sea became blood; 9 And a third [part][fn] of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and a third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon a third part of the rivers; [and upon the springs of the waters;][fn] 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood, and [a third part of][fn] the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and a third part of the sun was smitten, and a third part of the moon, and a third part of the stars, so as a third part of them was darkened, and the day did not shine for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I saw, and I heard an {eagle}[fn] flying in mid-heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, who are yet to sound!”
9 And the fifth angel sounded; and I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth, and the key of the bottomless well[fn] was given to him. 2 And [he opened the well of the abyss, and][fn] smoke rose from the well like the smoke of a {great}[fn] furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the well. 3 And from the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given to them as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was said to them that they should not harm the grass of the earth, [nor any green thing,][fn] nor any tree, but [[only]][fn] the men who do not have the seal of God on {the}[fn] foreheads. 5 And it was given to them that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented for five months, and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.
6 And in those days, men will seek death and will not find it, and they will desire to die, and death {flees}[fn] from them.
7 And the likenesses of the locusts were like horses prepared for battle, and on their heads were {crowns like gold},[fn] and their faces were like the faces of men, 8 and they had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like those of lions, 9 and they had breastplates [like breastplates][fn] of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of many chariots with horses running into battle, 10 and they have tails like scorpions and stingers, and in their tails {is their}[fn] power to harm men for five months. 11 [[And]][fn] {They have}[fn] as king [[the ruler]][fn] over them the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, [and][fn] in Greek he has the name Apollyon.
12 The first woe is past; behold, there are still two woes to come after {this}.[fn]
13 [And][fn] The sixth angel sounded; and I heard a voice [from the [four][fn] horns][fn] of the golden altar before God, 14 Saying to the [sixth][fn] angel, {the one having}[fn] the trumpet, “Release the [four][fn] angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels who had been prepared for the hour and [[into the]][fn] [day and][fn] month and year were released, so that they might [[not]][fn] kill a third of mankind. 16 And the number of the armies of the horsemen was two myriads of myriads;[fn] [[and]][fn] I heard the number of them.
17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and those who sat on them, having breastplates of fire and hyacinth[fn] and sulfur,[fn] and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and from their mouths came fire and smoke and sulfur.
18 From {these}[fn] [three][fn] [plagues][fn] a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and the smoke and the sulfur[fn] coming out of {their}[fn] mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths [and in their tails];[fn] for their tails are [like][fn] serpents, having heads, and with them they do harm.
20 And the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues [[of theirs]],[fn] did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons [and idols][fn] of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk, 21 and they did not repent of their murders, nor of their {drugs},[fn] nor of their sexual immorality[, nor of their thefts].[fn]
10 And I saw another strong angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, and a rainbow was over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire, 2 And holding in his hand a {little book}[fn] [which was opened].[fn] And he placed his [right][fn] foot upon the sea, and the left upon the land, 3 and he cried out with a loud voice, as a lion roars. And when it cried out, the [seven][fn] thunders spoke their voices. 4 And when the [seven][fn] thunders spoke, {I was}[fn] about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying [[to me]],[fn] “Seal up what the [seven][fn] thunders have said, and do not write it down.”
5 And the angel, whom I saw standing on the sea and on the earth, raised his [right][fn] hand to heaven 6 and swore {to}[fn] the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, [and the earth and what is in it,][fn] [and the sea and what is in it,][fn] that there would be no more delay, 7 but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God will be completed, just as he proclaimed to his servants the prophets.
8 And the voice which I heard from heaven, speaking again with me and saying, “Go, take the {book}[fn] that is opened [in the hand][fn] of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the earth.” 9 And {I went}[fn] to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.”
10 And I took the {little book}[fn] from the hand of the angel and ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey, and when I ate it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And {they say}[fn] to me, “You must prophesy again about peoples and [[about]][fn] nations and languages and many kings.”
11 And a reed like a rod was given to me [[and the angel stood]],[fn] saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship in it. 2 And [the court][fn] outside the temple cast out and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
3 “And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before {the Lord}[fn] of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and consumes their enemies; and if anyone wants to harm them, [thus][fn] he must be killed.
6 These have the power to shut the sky, so that no rain falls during the days of their prophecy, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire.
7 And when they have finished their testimony, the [[fourth]][fn] beast that rises from the abyss will make war with them and conquer them and kill them. 8 And their corpse will be in the street of the great city, which is called spiritually Sodom and Egypt, where [also][fn] {their}[fn] lord was crucified. 9 [And][fn] {They see}[fn] from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations their {corpse}[fn] for three and a half days, and they {do not allow}[fn] their corpses to be placed into {a tomb}.[fn] 10 And those dwelling on the earth {rejoice}[fn] over them and {are glad},[fn] and they {will send}[fn] gifts to one another, because {these}[fn] two prophets tormented those dwelling on the earth.
11 And after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered {in}[fn] them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them. 12 And {they heard}[fn] a loud voice from heaven saying [to them],[fn] “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at {that}[fn] {hour}[fn] there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; and 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
14 The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is coming soon.
15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The {kingdom}[fn] of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever. [[Amen]]”[fn]
16 And the twenty-four elders who sit [on their thrones][fn] [who are][fn] before [[the throne of]][fn] God fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, [[and who comes]][fn] for you have taken your great power and have begun to reign. 18 The nations raged, but {your}[fn] wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and to give the reward to your servants the prophets and to the saints and to those who fear your name, both small and great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”
19 And the temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen in {his temple},[fn] and there were flashes of lightning and voices and thunder [and an earthquake][fn] and great hail.
12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; [and][fn] she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.
3 And another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems; 4 and his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. 5 And she gave birth to a son, a male, who is destined to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod. And her child was snatched up to God and {to}[fn] his throne. 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
7 And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war {with}[fn] the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, 8 And they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent [of old][fn] who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now has come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ, because the accuser of our brothers has been {cast out},[fn] the one who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. 12 For this reason, rejoice, [O][fn] heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the [[inhabitants of]][fn] earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having [great][fn] wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.”
13 And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. 14 And [the][fn] two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished there for a time, and times, [and half a time,][fn] away from the face of the serpent.
15 And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and [the earth][fn] opened its mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon had poured out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged {at}[fn] the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her seed,[fn] who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus [[Christ]].[fn] 18 And {he}[fn] stood on the sand of the seashore.
13 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on its horns ten diadems, and on its heads {names}[fn] of blasphemy. 2 And the beast that I saw [was][fn] like a leopard, and its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave it his power and his throne and great authority. 3 And [[I saw]][fn] one of its heads seemed to have been slain unto death, and its death wound was healed. And the whole earth marveled after the beast. 4 And they worshiped the dragon, because it gave authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can wage war against it?”
5 And a mouth was given to it, speaking great things and blasphemies, and [authority][fn] was given to it {to act}[fn] for forty-two months. 6 And it opened its mouth for {blasphemies}[fn] against God, to blaspheme his name and his dwelling, those [who dwell][fn] in heaven.
7 [And it was given to it to make war with the saints and to conquer[fn] them,][fn] And authority was given to it over every tribe [and people][fn] and language and nation.
8 And all the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, whose name has not been written in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If anyone has ears, let him hear.
10 If anyone {is to go into}[fn] captivity, [into captivity][fn] they go. If anyone {is to be killed}[fn] with the sword, with the sword {they will be killed}.[fn] Here is the endurance and the faith[fn] of the saints.
11 And I saw another beast rising out of the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 And it exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and {makes}[fn] the earth and those dwelling in it so that they will worship the first beast, whose [death][fn] wound was healed. 13 And it performs great signs, {so that he even makes fire}[fn] come down from heaven to earth in the sight of men, 14 and it deceives those who dwell on the earth by the signs that it was allowed to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image for the beast, which has the wound of the sword and yet lived.
15 And it was given to it [to give][fn] spirit[fn] to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might also speak and [that][fn] as many as do not worship the image of the beast [[that]][fn] they should be killed. 16 And it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be given a mark on the right hand or {the forehead},[fn] 17 [and][fn] so that[fn] no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, {the name of the beast}[fn] or the number of its name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, [for it is the number of a man,][fn] [and its number is][fn] {six hundred sixty-six}.[fn]
14 And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him [[a number of]][fn] {one hundred forty-four thousand},[fn] having [his name and][fn] the name of his father written on their foreheads.
2 And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of many waters and like the sound of a [great][fn] thunder, and the voice I heard was [[a voice]][fn] like harpists playing on their harps.
3 And they sing [as][fn] a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures, [and the elders,][fn] and no one could learn the song except the {one hundred forty-four}[fn] thousand, those who were purchased from the earth; 4 [these are][fn] the ones who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever it goes. These were purchased [[by Jesus]][fn] [from among men][fn] as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb, 5 and in their mouth, no {lie}[fn] was found, [[for]][fn] they are blameless [[before the throne of God]].[fn]
6 And I saw [another][fn] angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth and to every nation and tribe and language and people, 7 [saying][fn] with a loud voice, “Fear {God}[fn] and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come, and worship {the one}[fn] who made the heaven and the earth and [[the]][fn] sea and springs of water.”
8 And another angel, [a second one][fn] followed, saying, “Fallen, [fallen][fn] is [Babylon][fn] the great, {who has made}[fn] all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her immorality.”
9 And [another][fn] angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships {the beast}[fn] and its image, [and][fn] receives a mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they too will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed undiluted in the cup of his anger, and they will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the [holy][fn] angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”
12 Thus [the][fn] endurance of the saints, [[here are]][fn] those who keep the commandments of God and the faith[fn] of Jesus.
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying [[to me]],[fn] “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. [Yes,][fn] says the Spirit, {so that}[fn] they may rest from their labors, {for}[fn] their deeds follow with them.”
14 [And I saw,][fn] And behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud one seated {like}[fn] a son of men, having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to the one seated on the cloud, “Send your sickle and reap, for the hour has come [[for you]][fn] to reap, because the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 And the one seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.
17 And another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and it too had a sharp sickle.
18 And another angel [came out][fn] from the altar, [he][fn] having authority over fire, and called with a loud {voice}[fn] to the one who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Send {your}[fn] sharp sickle and gather the clusters [of the vine][fn] of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.” 19 And the angel swung his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress up to the horses' bridles, for a distance of sixteen hundred stadia.
15 And I saw another great and marvelous sign in heaven, seven angels having seven plagues, the last ones, because in them the wrath of God was completed.
2 And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had conquered the beast and its image [[from his mark and]][fn] from the number of its name standing beside the sea of glass with harps of {God}.[fn] 3 And [they sing][fn] the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, King of the {nations}.[fn] 4 Who will [not][fn] fear [[you,]][fn] the Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. For all the nations will come and worship before you [[Lord]],[fn] for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
5 And after these things I saw, [[and behold,]][fn] the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened, 6 and the seven angels {who had}[fn] the seven plagues came out of the temple, [[who were]][fn] clothed in {pure, bright linen}[fn] and girded around their chests with golden sashes.
7 And {one of}[fn] the four [living][fn] creatures gave the seven angels [seven][fn] golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever. [[Amen]][fn] 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.
16 And I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the [seven][fn] bowls of God's wrath [on the earth].”[fn]
2 So the first went and poured out his bowl [{on}[fn] the earth],[fn] and a {harmful and evil sore}[fn] came {upon}[fn] the men who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped its image.
3 The second [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man, and every living soul died in the sea.
4 The third [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “You are righteous [[Lord]],[fn] the One who is and who was, [[and]][fn] the Holy One, because you have judged these things, 6 for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you {have given}[fn] them blood to drink; [[for]][fn] they are deserving.”
7 And I heard [[another from]][fn] the altar saying, “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.”
8 And the fourth [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given [to him][fn] to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and {they}[fn] blasphemed the name of God who has authority over these plagues, and they did not repent to give him glory.
10 And the fifth [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast, and its kingdom became darkened, and they gnawed {their}[fn] tongues because of the pain, 11 and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and they did not repent [of their deeds].[fn]
12 And the sixth [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl upon the great river, [the][fn] Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the {east}[fn] of the sun might be prepared.
13 And I saw [from the mouth of the dragon, and][fn] [from the mouth of the beast, and][fn] from the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; 14 For there are spirits of demons performing signs, which go out to the kings [[of the Earth and]][fn] of the whole world to gather them for the battle on the great day of God, the Almighty.
15 Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his garments, so that he may not walk naked and they see his shame. 16 And gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew Armageddon.[fn]
17 And the seventh [[angel]][fn] poured out his bowl {upon}[fn] the air, and a [great][fn] voice came {out}[fn] of the temple [[of heaven]][fn] from {the throne},[fn] saying, “It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of lightning, and voices, and thunders, and a great earthquake [occurred],[fn] such as had not occurred since men were upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And Babylon the great was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the wrath of {his}[fn] anger. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21 And great hail, as heavy as a talent, came down from heaven upon men, and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for its plague is exceedingly great.
17 And one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying [[to me]],[fn] “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters, 2 with her the kings of the earth committed sexual immorality, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her sexual immorality.”
3 And he carried me away in the spirit into a wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, {full of blasphemous names},[fn] {having}[fn] seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominations and the impurities of her immorality. 5 And [[on the earth and]][fn] on her forehead a name was written, a mystery: “Babylon the great, the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth.”
6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints [and][fn] with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. And I was greatly amazed when I saw her. 7 And the angel said to me, “Why are you amazed? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.
8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the abyss and go to destruction. And the inhabitants of the earth will {be amazed},[fn] those whose {name}[fn] has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast, because it was and is not and [[again]][fn] will be present.
9 “Here is the mind that has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits, and they are seven kings; 10 five have fallen, [[and]][fn] one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain for a little while.
11 And the beast that was and is not, is himself [also][fn] an eighth and is of the seven, and he goes to destruction. 12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. 13 These have one purpose, and they {give}[fn] their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are the called and chosen and faithful.”
15 And he said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. 16 And the ten horns that you saw, {and}[fn] the beast, they will hate the prostitute and will make her desolate and [[they will make her]][fn] naked, and they will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose [and to be of one mind,][fn] and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.”
18 [[And]][fn] After these things, I saw [another][fn] angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory. 2 And he cried out with a {loud}[fn] voice, saying, “Fallen, [fallen][fn] is Babylon the great, and it has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean [[and detestable]][fn] spirit, [and a prison of every unclean and hated bird,][fn] [and a prison of every unclean and hated beast],[fn] 3 because all the nations have {fallen}[fn] [of the wine][fn] of the wrath of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich from the power of her luxury.”
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive her plagues; 5 for her sins have {piled}[fn] up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6 Repay her as she has repaid [[you]];[fn] [and][fn] double [[to her]][fn] the double according to her deeds; in {the}[fn] cup which she has mixed, mix a double portion for her. 7 As much as she {was glorified}[fn] and lived luxuriously, give her that much torment and mourning. For in her heart she says, ‘[Because][fn] I sit as a queen, I am not a widow, and I will never see mourning.’
8 For this reason her plagues will come in one day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for [the Lord God][fn] who judges her is strong.
9 “And the kings of the earth who committed immorality [and lived luxuriously][fn] with her will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the mighty city! For in one hour your judgment [has come].’[fn]
11 “And the merchants of the earth {weep}[fn] and mourn over her, because no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 gold and silver and precious stone and pearls and fine linen [and purple][fn] and silk and scarlet, and all thyine wood and all ivory vessels and all vessels of most precious wood and bronze and iron and marble, 13 and cinnamon [and spice][fn] and incense [and perfume][fn] and frankincense and wine and oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and horses and chariots and slaves, and human souls. 14 And the fruit of your soul's desire has departed from you, and all the rich and the bright things have {perished}[fn] from you, and {they}[fn] will no longer find them.
15 The merchants of these things, who became rich from her, will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned {with}[fn] gold and precious stones and {a pearl};[fn] 17 for in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste.’ And every shipmaster and everyone who sails {to a place},[fn] [[the company]][fn] and sailors and as many as work the sea, stood from afar, 18 and {were crying out}[fn] as they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘{Who is like the great city?}’[fn] 19 And they threw dust on their heads and {were crying out},[fn] [weeping and mourning,][fn] saying, ‘Woe, [woe,][fn] the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich by her wealth, for in one hour she has been laid waste.’ 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and {the saints, [and the][fn] apostles and the prophets},[fn] because God has pronounced judgment for you against her.”
21 Then a [strong][fn] angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “{So}[fn] will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down with violence, and will not be found any longer [[in it]].[fn] 22 [And][fn] The sound of harpists and musicians and flute players and trumpeters will not be heard in you any longer; and no craftsman [of any craft][fn] will be found in you any longer; [and the sound of a mill will not be heard in you any longer;][fn] 23 and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer; and the voice of the bridegroom and [[voice of the]][fn] bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints and of all who have been slain on the earth.”
19 [[And]][fn] After this, I heard [what sounded like][fn] a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation, [glory][fn] [[and honor]][fn] and power belong to [[the Lord]][fn] our God, 2 for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.”
3 And again they said, “Hallelujah! Her smoke goes up forever and ever.”
4 And the twenty-four elders and the four [living][fn] creatures fell down and worshiped God who {is seated}[fn] on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!”
5 And a voice came {from}[fn] the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, [and][fn] those who fear him, both small and great.”
6 And I heard what sounded like a voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord, [our][fn] [God,][fn] the Almighty, reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad, and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to be clothed in {bright, pure linen}”[fn] — for the linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And he said to me, “Write: Blessed are those who are invited to the [marriage][fn] supper of the Lamb.” [And he said to me,][fn] “These are the true words of God.”
10 Then {I fell down}[fn] at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant [with you][fn] and your brothers who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! And the one sitting on it [called][fn] Faithful and True, and in righteousness judges and makes war. 12 But his eyes [were like][fn] a flame of fire, and on his head were many diadems, having [[names written and]][fn] a name [written which][fn] no one knows except himself, 13 and {wrapped}[fn] in a robe dipped in blood, and his name {has been}[fn] called the Word of God.
14 And the armies [that were][fn] in heaven were following it on white horses, dressed in {pure white linen}.[fn] 15 From his mouth comes a sharp [[double edge]][fn] sword, so that with it {he will strike}[fn] the nations; and he himself will shepherd them with an iron rod. He will tread the winepress of the fury {of}[fn] the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 [On his robe][fn] And on his thigh he has {a}[fn] name written: “King of kings and Lord of lords”.
17 And I saw {an}[fn] angel standing in the sun, and he cried out {with}[fn] a loud voice, saying to all the birds flying in midheaven, “Come, [[and]][fn] gather for the great feast of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of commanders, the flesh of the mighty, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, [both][fn] free and slave, [[both]][fn] small and great.”
19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make [the][fn] war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs in its presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image.
These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword of the one seated on the horse, {which came out}[fn] of his mouth; and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
20 And I saw an angel coming down [from heaven],[fn] having the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, [[the one deceiving the whole world]],[fn] and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the abyss, and shut {it}[fn] and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer until the thousand years were completed. [[And]][fn] After that, he must be released for a short time.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them,[fn] and [[I saw]][fn] the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not[fn] worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 [[And]][fn] [The rest of the dead did not live until the thousand years were completed.][fn]
This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him {a}[fn] thousand years.
7 And when[fn] the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations [which are][fn] in the four corners [of the earth],[fn] Gog and Magog, to gather them together for [the][fn] war; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down [from heaven][fn] [[from God]][fn] [and devoured them].[fn]
10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, [and][fn] where the beast and the false prophet are; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.[fn]
11 And I saw a great white throne and the one seated on it, from whose face earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, [the great and the small,][fn] standing before {the throne},[fn] and books were opened; [and another book was opened,][fn] which is of life. And the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one according to their deeds.
14 And Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, [the lake of fire].[fn] 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
21 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea is no more. 2 And I [[John]][fn] saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, descending from {heaven from God,}[fn] prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And [I heard][fn] a loud voice from {the throne}[fn] saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them [as their God],[fn] 4 and {he}[fn] will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying[, nor pain][fn] anymore, [for][fn] the former things have passed away.”
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am make all things new.” And he says [[to me]],[fn] “Write, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done. I {am}[fn] the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts [from the spring][fn] of the water of life freely. 7 The one who conquers will inherit {these}[fn] things, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, [[the sinful,]][fn] the detestable, the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.
9 And one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls {full}[fn] of the seven last plagues came [[to me]][fn] and spoke with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me [[the great]][fn] the holy city, Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
12 It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, [and at the gates twelve angels,][fn] and names {inscribed},[fn] which are [the names][fn] of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel; 13 on the east three gates, [and][fn] on the north three gates, [and] on the south three gates, [and] on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the [twelve][fn] names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 And the one speaking with me had a golden [measuring][fn] rod, in order to measure the city and its gates and its wall. 16 The city lies foursquare, and its length is as much as [also][fn] its width. And he measured the city with his rod, twelve thousand stadia; its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, one hundred forty-four cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel's measurement.
18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were [twelve][fn] pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass.
22 And I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
24 And the nations [[of those being saved]][fn] will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory [[and honor]][fn] into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day — and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it.
27 And nothing unclean will ever enter into it, also [the one][fn] who practices abomination and falsehood, except those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
22 And he showed me a [[pure]][fn] river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street and on either side of the river [was the tree of life],[fn] producing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 There will be no more curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5 And there will be no night, and they will have no need of [the light of][fn] a lamp or sunlight, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.
6 And {he said}[fn] to me, “These words are faithful and true; and the Lord, the God of {the spirits of},[fn] the prophets sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
7 “[And][fn] Behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
8 And I, John, am the one seeing [and hearing][fn] these things. And when I heard and saw, {I fell down}[fn] to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9 But he said to me, “See do not; [[for]][fn] I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers the prophets and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of {the}[fn] prophecy of this book, {for}[fn] the time is near. 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; [and let the filthy still be filthy;][fn] and let the one who is righteous continue to live righteously; and let the one who is holy continue to be holy.”
12 [[And]][fn] Behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to give to each one as his {work is}.[fn]
13 “I {am}[fn] the Alpha and the Omega, {the first and the last, the beginning and the end.}”[fn]
14 Blessed are those who {wash their robes},[fn] so that they may have the {right to}[fn] the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.
15 [[But]][fn] Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the sexually immoral and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root[fn] and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; And let the one who wishes take the water of life freely.
18 [[For]][fn] {I testify}[fn] to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone {imposes upon them},[fn] God will bring [upon him][fn] the plagues which are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of {the book of this prophecy},[fn] God {would remove}[fn] his part from the {tree}[fn] of life and [from][fn] the holy city, [[and]][fn] which are written in this book.
20 The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” [Amen.][fn] [[Yes,]][fn] Come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of {the}[fn] Lord Jesus [[Christ]][fn] be with all [[of the saints]].[fn] [[Amen]][fn]
