OET (OET-RV) When Noah was 600 years old (and around the beginning of May), deep underwater geysers in the ocean started spouting out water, and the skies began to drop heavy rain

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-ordinal

בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שֵׁשׁ־מֵא֤וֹת שָׁנָה֙ לְחַיֵּי נֹ֔חַ

in=year six hundreds year of,life Noḩa

Compare how you translated Noah’s age in verse 6.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

בַּחֹ֨דֶשׁ֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י בְּשִׁבְעָֽה עָשָׂ֥ר י֖וֹם לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ

in/on/at/with,month the=second in/on/at/with,seven ten day of_the,month

For some languages it is more natural to switch the phrase order and say which day it is before giving the month. Do what is natural in your language.

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה

in_the=day the=this

Alternate translation: “on that same day” or “that is the day when”

כָּֽל מַעְיְנֹת֙

all/each/any/every fountains

Alternate translation: “all the underground water sources”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

נִבְקְעוּ֙

burst_forth

For some languages it may be more natural to put this phrase earlier and say, “water started gushing/pouring out of all the fountains/springs in the deep ocean,” Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “split open,” or “started gushing out water,”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַאֲרֻבֹּ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם נִפְתָּֽחוּ

and,floodgates the=heavens opened

This metaphor describes the beginning of a very heavy rainfall; it does not refer to actual windows. Alternate translation: “and all the windows in the sky were opened by God,” or “God also caused the water in the heavens to start coming down, as if he had opened huge faucets in the heavens”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:11-12 on the seventeenth day of the second month: Such information gives the flood account a certain solemnity; it reminds readers that this was a true historical event.
• underground waters: See 2:6.
• rain fell: The flood undid the boundaries established on the second and third days of creation (1:6-13). Elsewhere, the Bible describes God’s judgment as an undoing of creation (see Jer 4:23-26; Amos 7:4).
• forty days and forty nights: See study note on 7:4.
