uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) A distressing vision has been given to me

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Yahweh showed me a troubling vision”

(Occurrence 0) the treacherous man deals treacherously

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

Alternate translation: “those who deceive will deceive”

(Occurrence 0) the destroyer destroys

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

Alternate translation: “those who destroy will destroy”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / apostrophe

(Occurrence 0) Go up and attack, Elam; besiege, Media

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

In the vision given to Isaiah, Yahweh speaks to the armies of Elam and Media as if they are there listening to him.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

(Occurrence 0) Go up and attack, Elam; besiege, Media

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

It is understood that they are to attack the Babylonians. Alternate translation: “Go up and attack the Babylonians, you soldiers of Elam; go and besiege the Babylonians, you soldiers of Media”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) Elam … Media

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

Here “Elam” and “Media” represent the soldiers from these places.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) I will stop all her groaning

(Some words not found in UHB: vision stern told to=me the,treacherous betrays and,the,destroyer destroys go_up ˊĒylām lay_siege Māday all/each/any/every groaning_of,she bring_to_an_end )

Here “her” represents all the people who are suffering because of the Babylonians. Yahweh will cause them to stop groaning when he sends the armies of Elam and Media to destroy the Babylonians.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:2 I see: The prophet personalized Babylon’s experience, which intensifies his poetry, as does the terse language and the repetition of similar sounds, such as the betrayer betraying (Hebrew habboged boged) and the destroyer destroying (Hebrew hashoded shoded; also in 33:1).
• The Elamites lived to the northeast of Babylon. Along with the Medes, they were archrivals of the Babylonians.
• I will make an end to all the groaning Babylon caused: Babylon had caused groaning by attacking and enslaving many nations. It is likely that the Elamites and Medes played a part in the overthrow of Babylon in 539 BC (21:9).
