OET (OET-RV)The ways of wisdom are pleasant,
⇔ ≈ and all its ways are peaceful.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:13–20: Wisdom is valuable and is useful for both people and the LORD

This section teaches the value of wisdom by showing its usefulness to people and the LORD. It is useful to people, because it results in long life, wealth, honor, pleasantness, and peace (3:13–18). It is useful to the LORD, because he used it to create the world (3:19–20).

Another heading for this section is:

The Value of Wisdom (CEV)

3:17

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

17a All her ways are pleasant,

17band all her paths are peaceful.

3:17a–b

(combined/reordered)

All her ways are pleasant, and all her paths are peaceful: These two lines contain parallel metaphors. These metaphors may describe the ways/paths that wisdom follows, in other words, the way she treats her followers. The metaphors may also describe the paths along which wisdom leads her followers. With either interpretation, this verse describes additional benefits that a person gains by being wise.

When you translate this verse, try to retain the figures of ways and paths if possible. For example:

She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. (NLT)

If it is not possible, you may translate the meaning without using the figures of speech. For example:

Wisdom will make your life pleasant and will bring you peace. (NCV)

3:17a

All her ways are pleasant,

All her ways are pleasant: The word that the BSB translates as pleasant could also be translated as “lovely,” “delightful,” or “agreeable.”

3:17b

and all her paths are peaceful.

all her paths are peaceful: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates here as peaceful is šalom. (See the note on 3:2b.) The NJB provides another way to translate this clause. It has:

her paths all lead to contentment

The CEV and GNT focus on the safety aspect of šalom. For example:

Wisdom…leads us safely along. (CEV)

Use an expression that focuses on one or more aspects of meaning of this word.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ דַרְכֵי־נֹ֑עַם וְֽכָל־נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ שָׁלֽוֹם

ways_of,her ways_of pleasant and=all pathways_of,her peace

These two phrases mean similar things. Solomon is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine the phrases and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “Her way of life is one of peaceful pleasantness”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ & נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ

ways_of,her & pathways_of,her

Her and her here refer to wisdom as if it were a woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Wisdom’s ways … wisdom’s paths”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ דַרְכֵי & נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ שָׁלֽוֹם

ways_of,her ways_of & pathways_of,her peace

In this verse, ways and paths refer to how being wise guides a person’s behavior. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Wise behavior is behavior of … wise behavior brings peace”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

דַרְכֵי־נֹ֑עַם

ways_of pleasant

Here Solomon is using the possessive form to describe ways that result in pleasantness. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “are ways that lead to pleasantness”

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

שָׁלֽוֹם

peace

Here Solomon implies that peace is the result of following wisdom's paths. Use a natural way in your language to indicate result. Alternate translation: “lead to being peaceful” or “result in living peacefully”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

שָׁלֽוֹם

peace

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of peace, you could express the same idea in another Alternate translation: “are what is peaceful”
