SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:21–35: Fourth lesson: Be a good neighbor and do not behave like a wicked person

The father started this lesson by exhorting his son to always use sound judgment, because then he would have nothing to fear (3:21–26). He then told his son what to avoid in order to be a good neighbor. He advised him to not follow the behavior of wicked people (3:27–31). The lesson ends with a series of contrasts between the way that the LORD will treat the righteous and the wicked (3:32–35).

Another heading for this section is:

How to be a good neighbor

3:33

Notice the parallel parts that contrast in meaning:

33a The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,

33bbut He blesses the home of the righteous.

3:33a

The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,

3:33b

but He blesses the home of the righteous.

3:33a–b

The curse of the LORD…He blesses: The curse of the LORD refers to bad things that the LORD causes to happen. The parallel phrase He blesses refers to the good things that he causes to happen. These parallel phrases do not refer primarily to words of blessing or cursing that the LORD speaks.

the house of the wicked…the home of the righteous: The Hebrew word bayit, which the BSB translates as house, can be used literally (a dwelling or building) or figuratively (the people who live in the house). It is recommended that you use the literal meaning “house” here, along with all English versions.The way in which modern translations have rendered “house” in figurative contexts is significant. For example, in 1 Chronicles 17:23, the NCV and NLT have “family,” the CEV and GNT have “descendants.” In Proverbs 31:15 and 3:21 and in Joshua 24:15, virtually all versions have “household” or “family.” The same pattern would be expected here in Proverbs 3:33 if a figurative meaning were in view, but every version translates this literally. Some scholars do advocate a figurative view. The NET footnotes say that “house” is a synecdoche of contents for the people in the house and all they possess. Waltke (page 272) agrees that in Hebrew the word “house” frequently refers to “the contents of the house, both the family and their posterity.” Fox (page 168) says: “The fact that when the evildoer’s house is cursed, his wife and children will suffer with him goes unnoticed.” This comment does not negate the possibility that God’s curse will fall on the literal house, thus all causing hardship to those who live in it. Delitzsch (page 73) contrasts the “house” of the wicked with the “dwelling-place” of the righteous. Cook (page 22) suggests an implied contrast between the “house” of the rich oppressor and the lowly shepherd’s hut. Whybray (page 73) says that the word in 33:3b properly refers to a shepherd’s hut but is apparently used here simply as a variant of “house.” NIDOTTE glosses naweh as ‘pasturage.’ It says that by extension the term can indicate an individual’s homeland, house, or even personal, moveable property. It gives no instances where the term has a figurative meaning such as “household” or “family.”

Another factor in favor of the literal meaning is that the parallel word naweh, which the BSB translates as home in 3:33b, is never used figuratively. Usually it refers specifically to pastureland or to a shepherd’s hut, but here it may simply be a variant of “house” in 3:33a.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

מְאֵרַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה

curse_of YHWH

Here Solomon is using the possessive form to describe a curse that comes from Yahweh. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “The curse from Yahweh”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּבֵ֣ית

in=house_of

Solomon speaks of the curse of Yahweh as if it were an object that he placed on top of the wicked person’s house. He means that Yahweh curses that house. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “is against the house of”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּבֵ֣ית & וּנְוֵ֖ה & יְבָרֵֽךְ

in=house_of & and_[the],habitation_of & blesses

Here, the words house and abode represent the families who live in those houses. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “is on the households of … but he blesses the households of”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

רָשָׁ֑ע

wicked

Here, the wicked one refers to wicked people in general, not a specific wicked person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an expression that would be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: “any wicked person”
