SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–12: Third lesson: Humbly trust in the LORD

This lesson consists of a series of commands. Each set of parallel commands is followed by a promised result, except for 3:12, which gives a reason for the command.

Another heading for this section is:

Trusting in the Lord (NLT)

3:4

Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man.

Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man: This verse contains the promised result of obeying the advice in 3:3. It is a single sentence in the Hebrew. It does not contain parallel parts.

find favor: To find favor in the sight of someone indicates that they will approve of you, will accept you, or will think well of you.

high regard: The Hebrew phrase śekel ṭob, which the BSB translates as high regard, has been understood in different ways, because its usual meaning, “good competence” or “good sense,” does not fit the context:

  1. Some scholars think that the original Hebrew text was šem ṭob “good name.” Others say that śekel has two distinct senses and that the second sense, “repute” is the one used here. Still others understand the whole phrase to mean “a reputation for good understanding/competence.”Of the scholars consulted, Toy favors the meaning “good name,” Fox and Waltke favor the meaning “good repute,” and Ross and Garrett favor the idea that others will recognize the person’s competence. Either way, the phrase would mean:

    a good reputation (NLT)

good repute (NRSV) (BSB, NLT, NRSV, NASB, NCV, NJPS, NIV)

  2. Other scholars say that “good competence” is a figure of speech (metonymy) that represents its result, namely, “success.”Hubbard, Whybray, Kidner, and McKane advocate the meaning “success.” For example:

Thus you will find…success… (NJB) (ESV, NJB, CEV, REB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), along with most versions and scholars.

in the sight of God and man: This phrase refers to the viewpoint or opinion of God and people. Some other ways to translate this whole verse are:

Then God and people will like you and hold you in high regard.

Then you will be respected and will please both God and people. (NCV)

If you do this, both God and people will be pleased with you. (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וּמְצָא־חֵ֖ן

and,find graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty

Here the word and introduces the result of obeying the commands stated in the previous verse. Use the most natural way in your language to indicate results. You may need to start a new sentence. Alternate translation: “If you do these things, then you will find favor” or “This will result in you finding favor”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

וּמְצָא

and,find

The word translated find is an imperative, but it communicates a good result rather than a command. Use a form in your language that communicates a good result. Alternate translation: [and then you will get]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמְצָא־חֵ֖ן וְשֵֽׂכֶל־ט֑וֹב

and,find graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty and,insight good

Here Solomon speaks of favor and good insight as if they were objects that a person could find. He means that God and man will show favor and good insight to the person who does what Solomon commanded in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and you will experience favor and good insight”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּעֵינֵ֖י

in/on=both_eyes_of

Here, eyes refers to seeing, and seeing is a metaphor for knowledge, notice, attention, or judgment. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “in the judgment of”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

וְאָדָֽם

and=human/ʼĀdām

Solomon is speaking of people in general, not of one particular man. If it would be helpful in your language, use a more natural phrase. Alternate translation: “and others”
