OET (OET-LV)If/because YHWH he_will_be (in)_confidence_of_your and_he_will_keep foot_of_your from_capture.

OET (OET-RV)because your confidence will be in Yahweh,
⇔ and he will protect you on your journey.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:21–35: Fourth lesson: Be a good neighbor and do not behave like a wicked person

The father started this lesson by exhorting his son to always use sound judgment, because then he would have nothing to fear (3:21–26). He then told his son what to avoid in order to be a good neighbor. He advised him to not follow the behavior of wicked people (3:27–31). The lesson ends with a series of contrasts between the way that the LORD will treat the righteous and the wicked (3:32–35).

Another heading for this section is:

How to be a good neighbor

3:26

Notice the parallelism.Toy (page 76) identifies this as progressive parallelism, but it looks like a typical example of synonymous parallelism in which the second line is more specific than the first. Also typical of synonymous parallelism is the fact that the first line is nonfigurative, the second line figurative. The second line gives a specific figurative example of how the LORD will be a person’s confidence.

26afor the LORD will be your confidence

26band will keep your foot from the snare.

3:26a

for the LORD will be your confidence

for the LORD will be your confidence: The phrase your confidence is a figure of speech (metonymy) that represents the basis or object of confidence. This line indicates that a person can confidently trust the LORD to care for him. It is implied that he will protect the person from danger. Another way to translate this clause is:

The Lord will keep you safe (GNT)

3:26b

and will keep your foot from the snare.

and will keep your foot from the snare: The phrase your foot is a figure of speech (synecdoche) that represents the whole person. For example:

He will keep you from being trapped. (NCV)

This figure of speech refers to the LORD’s protection from unexpected harm or danger. In languages where “trap” is understood only literally, it may be necessary to give the nonfigurative meaning, as the CEV has done. The CEV has also combined and/or reordered the parallel lines. It has:

You can be sure the Lord will protect you from harm. (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּֽי

that/for/because/then/when

For here indicates that what follows is a reason for the command in the previous verse. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “Do not be afraid of these things because”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְכִסְלֶ֑ךָ

(in),confidence_of,your

Here Solomon uses confidence to refer to the source of a person’s confidence. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “your source of confidence”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בְכִסְלֶ֑ךָ

(in),confidence_of,your

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of confidence, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “the one who makes you confident”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וְשָׁמַ֖ר רַגְלְךָ֣ מִלָּֽכֶד

and,he_will_keep foot_of,your from,capture

Here, foot represents the whole person. See how you translated the similar use of foot in [1:15](../01/15.md).

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְשָׁמַ֖ר רַגְלְךָ֣ מִלָּֽכֶד

and,he_will_keep foot_of,your from,capture

Here Solomon is referring to the “sudden dread” or “devastation” from verse 25 as being caught in a trap. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and he will keep you from being caught by devastation as by a trap” or “and he will keep you from harm”
