SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:21–35: Fourth lesson: Be a good neighbor and do not behave like a wicked person

The father started this lesson by exhorting his son to always use sound judgment, because then he would have nothing to fear (3:21–26). He then told his son what to avoid in order to be a good neighbor. He advised him to not follow the behavior of wicked people (3:27–31). The lesson ends with a series of contrasts between the way that the LORD will treat the righteous and the wicked (3:32–35).

Another heading for this section is:

How to be a good neighbor

3:34

Notice the parallel parts that contrast in meaning:

34a He mocks the mockers,

34bbut gives grace to the humble.

3:34a

He mocks the mockers,

3:34a–b

the mockers…the humble: In Hebrew, the word mockers refers to people who treat others with scorn, contempt, or ridicule.

This verse does not specify the object of the mockers’ scorn. It could be the LORD. For example:

The Lord laughs at those who laugh at him (NCV)

However, those whom they mock could also include their fellowmen or wisdom. If your language does not require that mockers have an object, it is better not to specify one. If it does require an object, follow the example of the NCV.

For more information on mockers, see the note on 1:22b. See mocker in the Glossary.

3:34b

but gives grace to the humble.

gives grace: Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

shows favor (GNT)

shows kindness (NAB)

is kind (CEV)

General Comment on 3:34a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to use two “if” clauses to translate the meaning of this verse. For example:

If people are scornful, the LORD will scorn them. If they are humble, he will be kind to them.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rpronouns

הֽוּא־יָלִ֑יץ

he/it scornful

Here, the pronoun himself is added to he to give greater emphasis to this action of Yahweh. Use a natural way in your language for bringing out this emphasis. Alternate translation: “he indeed mocks”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יִתֶּן־חֵֽן

gives graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty

The writer speaks of Yahweh favoring people as if his favor were an object that he gives to people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “he acts favorably” or “he gives grace”
