This lesson consists of a series of commands. Each set of parallel commands is followed by a promised result, except for 3:12, which gives a reason for the command.
Another heading for this section is:
Trusting in the Lord (NLT)
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:
9aHonor the LORD with your wealth
9band with the firstfruits of all your harvest;
(combined/reordered)
Offer to Yahweh some of your(sing) money and the first part of your harvest. Do this to honor him.
Honor the LORD with…with: In both lines of this verse, the Hebrew word that the BSB translates as with is literally “from/out-of.” This command indicates that a person should honor/respect the LORD by giving or offering to him a part of his wealth and a part of the firstfruits. Another way to translate these two lines is:
Honor the Lord by giving him your money and the first part of all your crops. (CEV)
your wealth…the firstfruits of all your harvest: The GNT interprets wealth to be equivalent to firstfruits. It has: “Honor the Lord by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces.” However, the Hebrew word hon that the BSB translates as wealth is used in Ezekiel of valuable metals and other merchandise. It probably does not refer to land, crops, and animals.See Fox (page 151). Some other ways to translate this word are:
money (CEV)
goods (NJB)
The term firstfruits refers to the first and best portion that a person harvested from an agricultural crop (see Exodus 23:19, 34:26, Deuteronomy 26:1–11.). So the whole verse refers to a person giving offerings from whatever kinds of things he owns and grows.
Honor the LORD with your wealth
Honor Yahweh by giving him part of your(sing) money/wealth
and with the firstfruits of all your harvest;
and part of the first and best portion of the crops that you(sing) harvest.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
מֵהוֹנֶ֑ךָ וּ֝מֵרֵאשִׁ֗ית כָּל־תְּבוּאָתֶֽךָ
from,wealth_of,your and,from,the_first_of all/each/any/every produce_of,your
Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the context if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “by giving from your wealth and by giving from the first of all your produce”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וּ֝מֵרֵאשִׁ֗ית
and,from,the_first_of
Here, first refers to the first crops that were harvested at harvest time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “and from the first crops harvested of”
3:1-12 The Lord blesses those who trust him and seek his will. His correction benefits those who follow him.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
