Section 3:1–12: Third lesson: Humbly trust in the LORD

This lesson consists of a series of commands. Each set of parallel commands is followed by a promised result, except for 3:12, which gives a reason for the command.

Notice the parallelism. The first line contains the topic of a simile. The second line contains the image.

12afor the LORD disciplines the one He loves,

12bas does a father the son in whom he delights.

There is an ellipsis of the verb in 3:12b. In many languages, this verb will need to be supplied from 3:12a. For example:

12bas a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.

for the LORD disciplines the one He loves,

for: The word that the BSB translates as for introduces the reason why a person should not reject the LORD’s discipline/rebuke. It is because his discipline shows that he loves that person.

the LORD disciplines: The word that the BSB translates as disciplines primarily means “rebukes” or “corrects,” but it also includes the meaning “chastens” or “punishes.”BDB (#3198), NIDOTTE, and TWOT all define the word in this context to mean “reprove,” “rebuke,” “correct,” but HALOT says the word has the sense “chasten” or “punish,” and NET, Whybray, and Garrett all mention that the sense of physical punishment is present. TWOT (#865) defines the word as “education and discipline as a result of God’s judicial actions.” It quotes one scholar who says that this “education” ranges in meaning from the chastisement of the sinner to the instruction and direction of the righteous. This is a verb form from the same Hebrew root as the noun “rebuke” in 3:11b. It is not the same Hebrew word as the one translated as “discipline” in 3:11a. A number of English versions translate it as:

corrects (GNT)

as does a father the son in whom he delights.

as does a father: Instead of father (Hebrew and most English versions), a few English versions have “parents.” It is recommended that you use the word father along with the majority of versions.

the son in whom he delights: The word that the BSB and many other versions translate as delights means “to be pleased with.”

For here introduces the reason for obeying the commands stated in the previous verse. Use the most natural way in your language to indicate reasons. You may need to start a new sentence. Alternate translation: “Do not do these things, because”

Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a clause would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the previous clause if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and like a father, he disciplines a son in whom he delights”

The phrase in whom he delights refers to the father’s affection for his son. It does not mean that the father approves of his son’s behavior. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “a son for whom he has great affection”
