SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–12: Third lesson: Humbly trust in the LORD

This lesson consists of a series of commands. Each set of parallel commands is followed by a promised result, except for 3:12, which gives a reason for the command.

Another heading for this section is:

Trusting in the Lord (NLT)

3:2

This verse is a single sentence in Hebrew. Although English versions divide the verse into two lines, these lines do not contain parallel parts. In Hebrew, the verse is more literally “For length of days and years of life and well-being they will add to you.”

3:2a

for they will add length to your days,

for they will add length to your days: The word for introduces the motivation or reason for remembering the father’s instructions. The motivation is that obeying these instructions will cause the person to live a long and satisfying life. Other ways to introduce this clause are:

because they will bring you long life (GW)

If you do this, you will live many years (NLT)

Then you will live a long time (NCV)

they will add length to your days: The Hebrew idiom “length of days” means “a long life.”

3:2a–b

(combined/reordered)

3:2b

years and peace to your life.

years and peace to your life: The phrase years and peace to your life implies a life that is both long and worthwhile. The Hebrew word šalom, which the BSB translates as peace, refers to good health, prosperity, personal well-being, and peaceful relations with others. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

your life will be satisfying (NLT)

they will increase…your well-being (NJB)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּ֤י

that/for/because/then/when

For here indicates that what follows is a reason for the commands in the previous verse. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “Remember my commandments because”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים וּשְׁנ֣וֹת חַיִּ֑ים וְ֝שָׁל֗וֹם יוֹסִ֥יפוּ לָֽךְ

length_of days and,years_of life(pl) and,peace add to/for=you(fs)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could change the order of these phrases. Alternate translation: “they will add to you length of days and years of life and peace”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים

length_of days

Here, length of days is an idiom that means “a long life.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have this meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “a long life”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּשְׁנ֣וֹת חַיִּ֑ים

and,years_of life(pl)

Here, years of life is an idiom that means “a long and fulfilling life.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have this meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and a fulfilling life” or “and years of fulfilling life”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וְ֝שָׁל֗וֹם

and,peace

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of peace, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “and a peaceful life”

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

יוֹסִ֥יפוּ

add

Here, the pronoun they refers to the law and commandments mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “my law and commandments will add”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יוֹסִ֥יפוּ לָֽךְ

add to/for=you(fs)

Here Solomon speaks of his commandments as if they could add length to a person’s life. He means that obeying his commandments will enable a person to live a long life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “obeying them will add to you” or “by obeying them you will add to yourself”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:2 Those who obey God’s laws are more likely to live many years; wickedness generally has negative physical and psychological consequences. However, evil people sometimes outlive righteous people (Eccl 7:15-18).
