Section 3:1–12: Third lesson: Humbly trust in the LORD

This lesson consists of a series of commands. Each set of parallel commands is followed by a promised result, except for 3:12, which gives a reason for the command.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

This verse expresses the result of obeying the commands in 3:7b.

healing…refreshment: The parallel terms that the BSB translates as healing and refreshment are literally “healing” and “drink.” In this context, healing probably refers not to recovery from an illness, but to restoration of full strength and well-being. “Drink” is a figure of speech (metonymy) that represents its result, namely, refreshment or strengthening.

to your body…to your bones: The parallel terms body and bones are figures of speech (synecdoche) that refer to the whole person.For the first term, the MT has “navel.” Some versions, such as the RSV, emend this term to “flesh,” which is very similar in Hebrew. However, that goes against the principle that the hardest reading is probably the correct one. There is no need to emend, since “navel” and “flesh” are both figures of speech (synecdoche) that represent “body.” The bones are specified, because people in Old Testament times considered strong, healthy bones to be a sign of good health.According to Fox (page 151), “moist, lubricated bones were thought to be a source and sign of vitality and health…, whereas hot and dry bones were deemed a severe systemic ailment.” Most scholars feel that this verse refers primarily to physical health and overall well-being. Thus, the NLT96 has:

you will gain renewed health and vitality (NLT96)

Here is another way to translate this:

This will make you healthy, and you will feel strong. (CEV)

Be careful not to imply that the young man being spoken to was wounded and in pain.

These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the phrases with a word other than and in order to show that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “It will be healing for your navel, yes, refreshment for your bones”

The pronoun It here refers to following the commands that Solomon stated in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “Obeying these commands will be”

Solomon is using parts of a person, the navel and bones, to represent a person’s whole body. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “for your body … for your whole body”

Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a clause would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the previous clause if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and it will be refreshment for your bones”
