OET (OET-LV) If/because truth palate_of_my it_will_utter and_is_(the)_abomination_of my_lips_of_my wickedness.
In contrast to the previous section describing the adulterous woman, this section describes personified Wisdom. The public setting for Wisdom’s speech is described in 8:1–3. In 8:4–11, she addresses all mankind and describes her own character. In 8:12–21, she provides reasons why people should choose her. Additional motivation is given in 8:22–31: Wisdom was with the LORD when he created the world. The section ends with Wisdom appealing to mankind to follow her teaching (8:32–36).
This section is a speech by personified Wisdom. As in Wisdom’s speech in 1:20–33, the Notes have used a capital letter for Wisdom in most verses. However, in her speech, Wisdom sometimes refers to “wisdom” as an ability that people have or use or should try to obtain. In some of these contexts, the Notes have used small letters for “wisdom.” The Display will often give more than one option. You may use either option in your language, depending on what is appropriate in each context.

In this paragraph, personified Wisdom invites all mankind to become shrewd and intelligent (4–5). She then describes the good qualities of her words as motivation to heed her invitation (6–9). She ends with another appeal that is based on her high value (10–11).
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:
7a For my mouth will speak the truth,
7band wickedness is detestable to my lips.
For my mouth will speak the truth,
You(plur) can also believe everything that I say.
Also listen(plur), because I speak only the truth,
For: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates literally as For gives the second reason for listening to Wisdom. The first reason is given in 8:6a.This is supported by both Fox (page 269) and Delitzsch (page 128). Line (b) starts with the conjunction that is normally translated with “and” in synonymously parallel lines. This verse does not give a reason or explanation for 8:6b. In some languages, it may be necessary to make explicit the connection to the command “Listen” in 8:6a. For example:
Also listen, for my mouth speaks what is true
my mouth will speak the truth: The phrase my mouth is a figurative way of referring to Wisdom herself. The word that the BSB translates as the truth also means “dependable” or “reliable.” In Hebrew, it occurs in an emphatic position in the sentence. Some ways to express this emphasis in English are:
I speak nothing but truth (REB)
I always speak the truth (CEV)
Only the truth is what I speak
and wickedness is detestable to my lips.
I would be utterly disgusted to say anything evil.
and I hate to tell lies.
and wickedness is detestable to my lips: The word that the BSB translates here as and is usually translated as “and” or left implicit when it introduces another parallel line with similar meaning. For example:
and my lips hate wickedness (NET)
wickedness is abhorrent to my lips (NJPS)
The clause wickedness is detestable to my lips is a figurative way of saying:
I detest saying anything that is wicked.
The word wickedness contrasts here with “what is true” in 8:7a. In this context, it may be understood specifically as “lies” (GNT). But the word itself means simply “evil” or “wickedness.” For the word translated as detestable (“abomination” in the ESV), see the note on 3:32a.

For here indicates that what follows in [8:7–9](../08/07.md) are additional reasons why people should listen to Wisdom, as commanded in the previous verse. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows are reasons. Alternate translation: “Listen because”

Here, palate and lips refer to the person who is speaking. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “I … me”

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of truth, wickedness, and abomination, you could express the same ideas in other ways. See how you translated wickedness in [4:17](../04/17.md) and abomination in [3:32](../03/32.md). Alternate translation: “true things, and wicked things are abominable to”
8:6-9 Wisdom is associated with truth, understanding, and knowledge, which are right, wholesome, plain, and clear. Wisdom detests deception, which is devious and crooked (cp. 1:2-7; 6:16-19).
