In contrast to the previous section describing the adulterous woman, this section describes personified Wisdom. The public setting for Wisdom’s speech is described in 8:1–3. In 8:4–11, she addresses all mankind and describes her own character. In 8:12–21, she provides reasons why people should choose her. Additional motivation is given in 8:22–31: Wisdom was with the LORD when he created the world. The section ends with Wisdom appealing to mankind to follow her teaching (8:32–36).
This section is a speech by personified Wisdom. As in Wisdom’s speech in 1:20–33, the Notes have used a capital letter for Wisdom in most verses. However, in her speech, Wisdom sometimes refers to “wisdom” as an ability that people have or use or should try to obtain. In some of these contexts, the Notes have used small letters for “wisdom.” The Display will often give more than one option. You may use either option in your language, depending on what is appropriate in each context.

In this paragraph, Wisdom gives additional reasons why people should choose her. The LORD created Wisdom before anything else (8:22–26), and she was present with the LORD when he created the world (8:27–29). She also delighted in what the LORD created (8:30–31).
Verses 8:22–23 make the general claim that the LORD created Wisdom before he created the world. Verses 8:24–26 make the same claim, using expressions that refer to specific phases of creation. The LORD created or gave birth to Wisdom before he created any of these other things.
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

There is an ellipsis in 8:22b. In some languages, it may be necessary to supply the missing words from 8:22a. For example:

The LORD: The word that the BSB translates as The LORD occurs in an emphatic position in the sentence. This is because Wisdom was the subject of the previous verses, but in this paragraph, the LORD is the main character. Use a natural way in your language to indicate that the main subject is now the LORD.
created me: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as created me usually means “to acquire.” However, in Genesis 14:19, it may mean “create” in the phrase “God Most High, creator of heaven and earth.” And in Gen. 4:1, when Eve had given birth to Cain, she said that she had “brought forth” a male child with the help of the LORD.Of the versions being used for TN, only the NCV, GW, and CEV support the meaning “possess.” For example the CEV and NCV both have “I was with the Lord.” But as Fox (page 279) points out, the verbs in this section “describe a one-time action, whereas possession is continuous. Subsequent possession may be assumed, though prior possession is indeed excluded.” In the parallel lines in 8:24–25, Wisdom says that she “was brought forth.” So in this context, “the LORD created me” means that the LORD figuratively gave birth to Wisdom.
In many languages, this figurative meaning will be difficult to understand. If that is true in your language, it is recommended that you use a nonfigurative expression, as the BSB does. For example:
Yahweh created me (NJB)
You may also be able to use a similar term such as “made” or “caused to exist.”
as His first course: In Hebrew, this phrase is literally “the first/beginning of his way.” There are two ways to interpret what it means:
Wisdom was the first thing that the LORD created. For example:
The Lord created me the first of his works (REB) (BSB, NIV, REB, NJB, GNT)
The LORD created Wisdom at/in/from the beginning. For example:
The Lord created me at the beginning of his work (NRSV) (NRSV, NLT, NET)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). It better fits the structure of the HebrewThe Hebrew phrase is “the beginning…,” not “in/at the beginning…” and forms a better parallel to 8:22b.
His first course: The word that the BSB translates as His first course (literally “his way”) means the LORD’s acts or doings.

before His works of old: There are two different ways to interpret this phrase:
One way to interpret this is that the LORD created wisdom and then there was some time before He began to create other things. For example:
long before he made anything else (NCV)
Another way to interpret this is that creating wisdom was the first in a list of things which God created.
the first of his acts of long ago (NRSV)
Both translations indicate that wisdom was the first thing that the LORD created at the beginning, before he created anything else. If possible, it is best to translate in a general way. The main point should be that wisdom was the first thing created. For example, the GNT translates the whole verse as:
The Lord created me first of all, the first of his works, long ago. (GNT)

Wisdom is leaving out some words in the second clause that in many languages a clause would need in order to be complete. You could supply this word from the first clause if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “Yahweh possessed me at the beginning of his way; Yahweh possessed me before his works from then”

These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second clause emphasizes the meaning of the first clause by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the phrases with a word that shows that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “Yahweh possessed me at the beginning of his way, yes, Yahweh possessed me before his works from then”

Some scholars believe that the word translated as possessed could also mean “created.” Either way, the point is that Yahweh had wisdom before he created the universe. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.
