OET (OET-LV)About_time tomorrow I_will_send to_you a_man from_the_land_of Binyāmīn and_you_will_anoint_him to_ruler over people_of_my Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) and_he_will_deliver DOM people_of_my from_the_hand_of the_Fəlishtiy if/because I_have_seen DOM people_of_my if/because of_distress_of_its_cry it_has_come to_me.

OET (OET-RV)About this time tomorrow, I’ll send a Benyamite man to you, and you should anoint him to be ruler over my people Yisrael. He will rescue my people from the Philistines, because I’ve noticed my people because I heard their cries.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶשְׁלַח֩ אֵלֶ֨יךָ אִ֜ישׁ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֗ן

send to,you (a)_man from,the_land_of Binyāmīn

Yahweh means that he will cause this man to arrive from the land of Benjamin. He does not mean that he will actively send Saul to Samuel by commanding Saul to go. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [I will cause a man to come to you from the land of Benjamin]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כָּעֵ֣ת ׀ מָחָ֡ר & עַמִּ֣י & כִּ֤י רָאִ֨יתִי֙ & כִּ֛י בָּ֥אָה צַעֲקָת֖וֹ אֵלָֽי

about,time tomorrow & people_of,my & that/for/because/then/when seen & that/for/because/then/when come of_distress_of,its_cry to,me

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of the last two phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Since the two phrases together give the reason for what Yahweh says in the preceding part of the verse, you could then move them to the beginning of the verse. Alternate translation: [The cry of my people has come to me, and so I have considered their situation, and as a result, about this time tomorrow]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מִיַּ֣ד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים

from,the_hand_of Pelishtim

Yahweh is speaking of the hand of the Philistines by association to mean their power. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [from the power of the Philistines]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עַמִּ֣י & רָאִ֨יתִי֙

people_of,my & seen

Yahweh is saying that he has seen his people to mean by association that he has noticed with concern the situation of his people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [I have noticed with concern how my people have been suffering]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

בָּ֥אָה צַעֲקָת֖וֹ אֵלָֽי

come of_distress_of,its_cry to,me

Yahweh is speaking of the cry of his people as if it were a living thing that could travel to him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I have heard them crying out to me for help]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:16 God’s directive to anoint him (by pouring olive oil on the head) marked Saul’s elevation in status and consecration for a special purpose (see Exod 30:22-33; Lev 8:12; 1 Kgs 19:16; Isa 45:1).
• He will rescue them: As they had requested (1 Sam 8:20; cp. Judg 13:5). David eventually subdued the Philistines (2 Sam 5:17-25; 8:1; 21:15, 18-22).
• for I have . . . heard their cry (cp. Exod 3:7-9): The Philistines were again threatening to conquer Israel and demand homage from them as vassals.

OET (OET-RV)About this time tomorrow, I’ll send a Benyamite man to you, and you should anoint him to be ruler over my people Yisrael. He will rescue my people from the Philistines, because I’ve noticed my people because I heard their cries.”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
