TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:1-7 The fifth plague was against the livestock. As with the withholding of flies from the area where the Hebrews lived (8:22-23), the distinction between the livestock of the Israelites and that of the Egyptians (9:4) shows that a natural explanation of this event is insufficient, even if the previous plagues contributed. The Egyptians, like many in the ancient Near East, worshiped the ram, the goat, and the bull as representing power and fertility. These animals had no power before the Lord, in whom true power resides.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ יְהוָ֜ה

and=he/it_made YHWH

It is implied that Moses went and spoke to Pharaoh as directed. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express that explicitly. Alternate translation: “Moses did as Yahweh had commanded. And Yahweh did”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

כֹּ֖ל מִקְנֵ֣ה

all livestock

This is exaggerated to emphasize the seriousness of the event. There were still some animals alive that were afflicted by later plagues. However, it may be best to translate this with the word “all.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מִצְרָ֑יִם

from_Miʦrayim/(Miʦrayim/(Egypt))s

Here, Egypt refers to the Egyptians. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “the Egyptian peoples’”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

וּמִמִּקְנֵ֥ה בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹא־מֵ֥ת אֶחָֽד

and,of,livestock sons_of Yisrael not died one(ms)

Here the author uses a figure of speech that expresses a strong positive meaning by using a negative word together with a word that is the opposite of the intended meaning. If this is confusing in your language, you can express the meaning positively. Alternate translation: “But every single one of the Israelites’ livestock lived”
