Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

9:13-33 The seventh plague was a hailstorm (9:18). It rains in Egypt only a few days each year, and hail and thunderstorms are largely unknown, so this storm would have been terrifying. That may be why there is more theological reflection associated with it. The devastating effect of the plague was to destroy the flax and barley crops (9:31).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
עוֹדְךָ֖ מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל בְּעַמִּ֑י
still,you exalting_yourself in/on/at/with,people,my
Pharaoh’s opposition to letting the Israelites go to worship Yahweh is spoken of as if he were raising himself up as a barrier to them. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “You are still blocking my people”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rpronouns
מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל
exalting_yourself
Here, Pharaoh is both the subject and object of the sentence. Translate this in a way that conveys that (1) Pharaoh is making Pharaoh (himself) proud and (2) this is metaphorically expressed as Pharaoh making Pharaoh (himself) the obstacle in the Israelites’ way to freedom (as discussed in the previous note.)
מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל
exalting_yourself
Here, you is Pharaoh.
בְּעַמִּ֑י
in/on/at/with,people,my
Here, my people are the Israelites.
