The phrase in you refers to Abram and his descendants, including, ultimately, the Messiah. In other words, God’s promise in this verse is part of his wonderful news (the gospel message) for all people (Galatians [3:8–9](../03/08.md)) and is a prophecy about the Messiah, who was one of Abraham’s descendants (Matthew [1:1](../01/01.md), Genesis [22:18](../22/18.md), and Galatians [3:16](../03/16.md)). God blessed all people on earth by sending his Son Jesus (the Messiah/Christ) to die in their place and pay for all their sins (John [3:16–18](../03/16.md), 1 Timothy [2:3–6](../02/03.md)), so that they could have a close relationship with him/God and be part of his family forever. God repeats this great promise in Genesis [18:18](../18/18.md); [22:18](../22/18.md); [26:4](../26/04.md); [28:14](../28/14.md). You could put some of that information in a footnote. Alternate translation: [through you and your offspring,] or [because of you and your offspring,] or [by means of you and your offspring,]

The expression will be blessed is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is God. Alternate translation: [And in you I will bless all the families of the earth]
