OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_called Farˊoh for_Abram and_he/it_said what this have_you_done to/for_me to/for_what not did_you_tell to/for_me if/because_that wife_your she.

OET (OET-RV)So Far’oh called for Abram and said, “What’s this you’ve done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she’s your wife?

uW Translation Notes:

וַיִּקְרָ֤א פַרְעֹה֙

and=he/it_called Farˊoh

Alternate translation: “So King Pharaoh sent for Abram” or “Then Pharaoh summoned Abram before him” or “Then the king sent for Abram to come to him”

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

and=he/it_said

Make sure that the way you translate this quote margin fits with the way that you translate the following quote. Alternate translation: “and asked him,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

מַה זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֑י

what? this you(ms)_have_done/made to/for=me

Pharaoh uses rhetorical questions in verses 18 and 19 to express his anger at what Abram had done; he does not expect Abram to answer him. Some languages must use statements or exclamations here instead. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “Why have you treated me so badly?”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

לָ֚מָּה לֹא הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֔י כִּ֥י אִשְׁתְּךָ֖ הִֽוא

to/for=what not tell to/for=me that/for/because/then/when wife,your who/which

Alternate translation: “You should have informed me that she is your wife!”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

12:10-20 This episode shows that God would not allow Abram to jeopardize his promises. Just after Abram’s obedience to the call, a famine tested his weak faith. God delivered him and his family, even though Abram foolishly used deception rather than trusting in God to preserve him in Egypt.
• This story deliberately parallels Israel’s later bondage in Egypt. Because of a famine (Gen 12:10 // Gen 47:13), Abram/Israel went to Egypt (Gen 12:10 // Gen 47:27); there was an attempt to kill the males and save the females (Gen 12:12 // Exod 1:22); God plagued Egypt (Gen 12:17 // Exod 7:14–11:10); Abram/Israel plundered Egypt (Gen 12:16 // Exod 12:35-36); they were expelled (Hebrew shalakh, “send”; Gen 12:19-20 // Exod 12:31-33) and ascended to the Negev (Gen 13:1 // Num 13:17, 22). Israel was to believe that God would deliver them from bondage in Egypt through the plagues because their ancestor had already been rescued from bondage in Egypt.
