Section 1:20–33: Wisdom warns people not to reject her advice

In this section, Wisdom is personified as a woman teacher or prophetess who publicly warns people not to reject her advice. After an introduction (1:20–21), Wisdom begins her speech. In her speech, she scolds foolish people for ignoring her teaching (1:22–27). She then describes what will happen to such people (1:28–31). She concludes her speech by contrasting the fate of fools with the happiness of those who obey her (1:32–33).

In the verses that contain Wisdom’s speech, the Notes use a capital letter for Wisdom, except where a quoted version has small letters. The Display provides more than one option. You may use either option in your language, depending on what is appropriate in each context. See the note at Section 8:1–36 for more information about using a capital letter to indicate personification.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

These parallel parts are phrases that describe the manner in which a person who obeys Wisdom will live.

dwell in safety, secure from the fear of evil: These phrases both describe the secure life which Wisdom offers people who obey her teaching. The first phrase, dwell in safety, refers to a permanent living situation where there is no danger. The phrase secure from the fear of evil means to be undisturbed and at rest. Some other ways to translate these phrases are:

you will be safe and secure without fear of disaster (CEV)

will live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm (NLT96)

will have security. He will be safe, with no reason to be afraid (GNT)

But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,

But those who heed my advice will live in a place where there is nothing dangerous. They will have nothing to disturb them

But here indicates a strong contrast between the one who listens and “the naive ones,” who were mentioned in the previous verse. Use the most natural way in your language to indicate a contrast. Alternate translation: “However, the one who listens”

Here, the possessive form describes dread that a person has for evil. If this is not clear in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “from dreading evil”
