TSNTyndale Study Notes:

34:1-35 God granted Moses’ request (33:18), showed Moses his goodness (34:1-9), and renewed the covenant (34:10-35). This renewal was a unilateral statement by God. God would indeed go with his people, maintaining his covenant promises even though they had broken the covenant (32:1-6) and deserved nothing better than death and abandonment.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-numbers

עֲשֶׂ֖רֶת

ten

Alternate translation: “10”

אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יוֹם֙ וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים לַ֔יְלָה

forty day and,forty nights

Alternate translation: “for 40 days, including the nights”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב

and,wrote

Here, he probably refers to Moses, based on Yahweh’s command in the previous verse. However, Exodus 34:1 opens the possibility that Yahweh wrote. It is best to leave it ambiguous, but if you must specify, saying Moses is better. Alternate translation: “Moses wrote”
