25:28 Perhaps Abigail is suggesting that David's current mission is not sanctioned by God and that to follow through with it would be to compromise his reputation, especially as future king of Israel.

T4TPlease forgive me if I have done anything wrong to you. Yahweh will surely reward you by allowing many of your descendants to become kings of Israel, because you are fighting the battles that Yahweh wants you to fight. And I know that throughout all your life you have not done anything wrong.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

25:28 a lasting dynasty: See 2 Sam 7.
• fighting the Lord’s battles: David was known and loved for his victories over Israel’s enemies (1 Sam 18:7, 13, 16).
• have not done wrong: This comment does not indicate that David was sinless, but rather that he was innocent in his quest for the throne (as 25:29-31 makes clear).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

שָׂ֥א & לְפֶ֣שַׁע

forgive & to,transgression_of

Abigail is speaking of transgression as if it were an object that someone could lift off another person. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [forgive the transgression of]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

כִּ֣י

that/for/because/then/when

Here the word For introduces a reason why David should forgive Abigail. Alternate translation: [You should do this because]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

עָשֹֽׂה־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ יְהוָ֨ה לַֽאדֹנִ֜י בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֗ן כִּי־מִלְחֲמ֤וֹת יְהוָה֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י נִלְחָ֔ם

to_make he/it_made/did YHWH for,lord_of,my house lasting that/for/because/then/when battles_of YHWH my=master fighting

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [since you, my master, are fighting the battles of Yahweh, making, Yahweh will make for you, my master, an established house]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

עָשֹֽׂה־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ יְהוָ֨ה לַֽאדֹנִ֜י בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֗ן

to_make he/it_made/did YHWH for,lord_of,my house lasting

Abigail is repeating forms of the verb “make” in order to intensify her expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will surely make for you, my master, an established house]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

עָשֹֽׂה־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ יְהוָ֨ה לַֽאדֹנִ֜י בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֗ן

to_make he/it_made/did YHWH for,lord_of,my house lasting

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will surely establish a house for you, my master]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֗ן

house lasting

Abigail is speaking of David’s royal dynasty as if it were a house that would stand firmly. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [an enduring royal dynasty]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְרָעָ֛ה לֹא־תִמָּצֵ֥א בְךָ֖

and,evil not found in=you(ms)

Abigail is using a common expression of her culture. When she says that evil will not be found, she means that it will not be able to be found because it will not be there. See how you translated the similar expression in [9:8](../09/08.md). Alternate translation: [And there will be no evil in you]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וְרָעָ֛ה לֹא־תִמָּצֵ֥א בְךָ֖

and,evil not found in=you(ms)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of evil, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [And you will not be guilty of having done something very wrong]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מִיָּמֶֽיךָ

as_long_as,live_of,you

Abigail is using the term days by association to mean a specific time, the lifetime of David, since time is made up of days. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [for your whole lifetime]
