21:29 Or “place”

21:29 Literally “who has come their day”

21:29 Literally “in the time of the punishment of the end”

BBEYour vision is to no purpose, your use of secret arts gives a false answer, to put it on the necks of evil-doers who are wounded to death, whose day has come, in the time of the last punishment.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

21:1-32 This chapter is unified by references to a sword (21:3-5, 9, 11-12, 14-16, 19, 28-30), which in each case depicts God’s judgment.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

(Occurrence 0) empty visions for you … with lies for you

(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD because made_~_tobe_remembered,you_all guilt,your_all's in/on/at/with,uncovered transgressions,your_all's so_that,appear sins,your_all's in/on/at/with,all deeds,your_all's because come_to_remembrance,you_all in/on/at/with,hand captured )

“empty visions for you Ammonites … with lies for you Ammonites.” The word “you” refers to the people of Ammon. In the original Biblical language, the word “your” is feminine singular and refers to the nation of Ammon. Nations were often thought of as a woman.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) empty visions

(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD because made_~_tobe_remembered,you_all guilt,your_all's in/on/at/with,uncovered transgressions,your_all's so_that,appear sins,your_all's in/on/at/with,all deeds,your_all's because come_to_remembrance,you_all in/on/at/with,hand captured )

This speaks of visions being false and meaningless as if they were empty containers. Alternate translation: “visions that are not true” or “false visions”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

(Occurrence 0) the wicked

(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD because made_~_tobe_remembered,you_all guilt,your_all's in/on/at/with,uncovered transgressions,your_all's so_that,appear sins,your_all's in/on/at/with,all deeds,your_all's because come_to_remembrance,you_all in/on/at/with,hand captured )

This refers to wicked people. Alternate translation: “those who are wicked”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) who are about to be killed

(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD because made_~_tobe_remembered,you_all guilt,your_all's in/on/at/with,uncovered transgressions,your_all's so_that,appear sins,your_all's in/on/at/with,all deeds,your_all's because come_to_remembrance,you_all in/on/at/with,hand captured )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “who are about to die”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) whose day of punishment has come and whose time of iniquity is about to end

The phrases “day of” and “time of” are idioms. Alternate translation: “for the time has come for them to be punished and for their iniquity to end” or “for the time has come for me to punish them and for them to no longer be able to commit wickedness”
