TSNTyndale Study Notes:

40:3 the voice of someone shouting: In Mal 3:1 this person (possibly the Elijah of Mal 4:5) was God’s messenger who prepared the way for God’s coming. In the Gospels, this announcer was identified with John the Baptist (Matt 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; John 1:23).
• Clear the way . . . Make a straight highway: The announcer’s message would expedite God’s coming (see Isa 35:8). As God made a way for Israel through the Red Sea (43:16), so a way would be opened up for the Lord (see 52:11-12).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) A voice cries out

(Some words not found in UHB: sound/voice calling in/on/at/with,wilderness prepare road/way_of YHWH make_straight in/on/at/with,desert highway for,God,our )

The word “voice” represents the person who cries out. Alternate translation: “Someone cries out”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) In the wilderness prepare the way of Yahweh; make straight in the Arabah a highway for our God

(Some words not found in UHB: sound/voice calling in/on/at/with,wilderness prepare road/way_of YHWH make_straight in/on/at/with,desert highway for,God,our )

These two lines are parallel and mean basically the same thing. The people preparing themselves for Yahweh’s help is spoken of as if they were to prepare roads for Yahweh to travel upon. (See also: figs-metaphor)

(Occurrence 0) Arabah

(Some words not found in UHB: sound/voice calling in/on/at/with,wilderness prepare road/way_of YHWH make_straight in/on/at/with,desert highway for,God,our )

See how you translated this word in Isaiah 35:1.
