Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

הֲיַ֥ד יְהוָ֖ה תִּקְצָ֑ר

the,hand?_of YHWH limited

Yahweh is using the question form Is the hand of Yahweh short? to strongly emphasize that he is fully able to do what he has promised. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [The hand of Yahweh is not short!]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הֲיַ֥ד יְהוָ֖ה תִּקְצָ֑ר

the,hand?_of YHWH limited

Here, Yahweh is speaking as if he had a hand that could be too short to reach what he wanted. He means that his power is not limited. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Is the power of Yahweh limited?]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

הֲיַ֥ד יְהוָ֖ה

the,hand?_of YHWH

Yahweh is speaking of himself in the third person as Yahweh. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: [my hand]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

עַתָּ֥ה תִרְאֶ֛ה הֲיִקְרְךָ֥ דְבָרִ֖י

now you(ms)_will_see will,it,happen_to_you? word_of,my

The word you is singular here because Yahweh is speaking directly to Moses. So use the singular form in your translation if your language marks that distinction. Alternate translation: [Now Moses, you will see whether my word will happen to you or not]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עַתָּ֥ה תִרְאֶ֛ה

now you(ms)_will_see

Here, see represents experiencing or knowing something. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [Now you will experience]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

דְבָרִ֖י

word_of,my

Here, word represents what Yahweh said he would do. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [what I said]
