TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:29 leprosy: While leprosy is a possible translation, the Hebrew here probably refers to a broader range of skin inflammations, not only Hansen’s disease.
• who walks on crutches: This curse effectively alienated Joab from David, and from this point on they had only a professional relationship. David’s deathbed order to Solomon to get rid of Joab (1 Kgs 2:5-6) and Solomon’s exoneration of David in Abner’s death (1 Kgs 2:31-33) indicate that David’s mourning over Abner was genuine.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) fall on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house

(Some words not found in UHB: fall on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in head Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=near/to all/each/any/every house_of his/its=father and,never be_without from,house Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) has_a_discharge and,leprosy and,holds in/on/at/with,spindle and,falls in/on/at/with,sword and,lacks food )

This phrase means the results of the guilt will happen to Joab and his family as if something heavy had collapsed on them. Alternate translation: “always cause suffering for Joab and for all his father’s house”

This double negative emphasizes that there will always be someone with the problems listed. Alternate translation: “May there always be”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) is killed by the sword

(Some words not found in UHB: fall on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in head Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=near/to all/each/any/every house_of his/its=father and,never be_without from,house Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) has_a_discharge and,leprosy and,holds in/on/at/with,spindle and,falls in/on/at/with,sword and,lacks food )
