OET (OET-LV)And_let_alone from_him/it then she_said a_bridegroom of_blood(s) because_of_the_circumcision.

OET (OET-RV)(That was referring to circumcision.) So then Yahweh left them alone.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וַיִּ֖רֶף

and,let_~_alone

God relented as a result of Zipporah’s action. Consider a conjunction or other form that expresses result, as in the UST.

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיִּ֖רֶף

and,let_~_alone

Here, he refers to Yahweh. Alternate translation: “Yahweh relented”

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

from=him/it

As in 4:24, him could refer to either Moses or the son, but most commentators think it is still Moses. The UST uses “anyone” to preserve ambiguity. Alternative translation: “from Moses”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

חֲתַ֥ן דָּמִ֖ים

bridegroom blood

This is a unique quotation because Zipporah probably does not speak again; rather, the quotation refers back to her statement in 4:25. Use a form from your language for quoting a portion of what someone previously said. If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this as an indirect quotation.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

חֲתַ֥ן דָּמִ֖ים לַמּוּלֹֽת

bridegroom blood because_of_the,circumcision

It is not clear if the quotation includes because of the circumcision or if that is a comment explaining the quotation. Translations are divided in where they end the quotation, but most exclude because of the circumcision, and it is best to follow that unless a locally respected translation includes it.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:24-26 This incident is shrouded in mystery. That Zipporah responded immediately and circumcised her son suggests that she and Moses had discussed the possibility of doing so previously and had decided it was not necessary. Why would having an uncircumcised son lead to God’s intent to kill the rescuer he had carefully prepared and called? Perhaps if Moses had arrived in Egypt claiming to represent the God of the Israelites’ ancestors and yet had not done the one thing God had commanded of his followers to this point (Gen 17:10), then the people would have been less inclined to follow God in a radically exclusive way.

OET (OET-RV)(That was referring to circumcision.) So then Yahweh left them alone.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
