OET (OET-LV) And_said to_you let_go DOM son_my and_worship_me and_refused to_let_go_him here I [am]_about_to_kill DOM son_your firstborn_your.
OET (OET-RV) and he asked you to let that son go so that he can serve him. But you refused to let Yisra’el go, so Yahweh will kill your oldest son.’ ”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks
שַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־בְּנִי֙ וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי
let_~_go DOM son,my and,worship,me
This is a fourth-level quotation. It should be marked in some manner that distinguishes it from the outer levels. (If you chose to translate “Thus says Yahweh” as an indirect quote, this will be a third-level quotation.)
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations
וָאֹמַ֣ר אֵלֶ֗יךָ שַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־בְּנִי֙ וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי וַתְּמָאֵ֖ן
and,said to,you let_~_go DOM son,my and,worship,me and,refused
The fourth-level quotation here may be a good one to translate as an indirect quotation in order to reduce the levels of quotations in this passage. Alternative translation: “and I told you to let my son go that he may serve me. But you have refused”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
בְּנִי֙
son,my
Yahweh continues to metaphorically speak of Israel as my son. See how you translated it in the previous verse. Alternative translation: “the Israelite nation, which is like a son to me”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns
וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי & לְשַׁלְּח֑וֹ
and,worship,me & to,let_~_go,him
The pronouns he and him agree with “son.” What you use may depend on how you translated son in the previous verse.
הִנֵּה֙
see/lo/see!
This is used to draw attention to surprising information that follows. Alternative translation: “Know this”
בִּנְךָ֖
son,your
Here, your son refers to the actual son of Pharaoh.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks
בִּנְךָ֖ בְּכֹרֶֽךָ
son,your firstborn,your
After this phrase, the three levels of direct quotations end, bringing a complete close to all quotations that started in verses 21 and 22. If you are using direct quotations, at the end of this verse you should have three closing markers: third level, second level and first level. In English, it looks like “ ’ ” (without spaces).
4:21-23 These verses summarize the events of the next several chapters, beginning with the request to let the people go so that they could worship God (5:3) and concluding with the final plague, the death of the firstborn (11:4-6). God was preparing the rescuer for the difficult task ahead (see 11:9).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
