OET (OET-LV)[fn] and_he/it_said YHWH to Mosheh rise_early in/on/at/with_morning and_present to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh there [he_is]_going_out the_water_to and_say to_him/it thus he_says YHWH let_go people_my and_worship_me.

8:16 Note: KJB: Exod.8.20

OET (OET-RV)Then Yahweh said to Mosheh, “Tell Aharon: Stretch out your staff and strike the dust on the ground, and it will turn into lice[fn] all over Egypt.”

8:16 The Hebrew word ‘כֵּן/כִּנִּם’ (kēn/kinnim) could refer to either lice, gnats, or fleas. However, unlike lice, gnats don’t usually reside on people and animals (which seems to be implied by the text).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Mosheh get_up_early in/on/at/with,morning and,present to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh see/lo/see! going_out the,water,to and,say to=him/it thus he/it_had_said YHWH let_~_go people,my and,worship,me )

A new scene begins here. Use the natural form in your language for introducing a new event. This is the start of the third plague sequence.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ אֱמֹר֙ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Mosheh get_up_early in/on/at/with,morning and,present to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh see/lo/see! going_out the,water,to and,say to=him/it thus he/it_had_said YHWH let_~_go people,my and,worship,me )

Say to Aaron starts a direct quotation. It may be helpful to your readers to indicate this by marking it with first-level quotation marks or with whatever other punctuation or convention your language uses to indicate a quotation. However, it may be helpful to translate one of the parts as an indirect quotation so that you do not have to have two levels of quotations here. See the UST. Alternate translation: “And Yahweh told Moses to tell Aaron”

נְטֵ֣ה אֶֽת־מַטְּךָ֔ וְהַ֖ךְ

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Mosheh get_up_early in/on/at/with,morning and,present to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh see/lo/see! going_out the,water,to and,say to=him/it thus he/it_had_said YHWH let_~_go people,my and,worship,me )

This is one action or motion, but it is described with the two verbs that occur throughout this section of plague judgment.

מַטְּךָ֔

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Mosheh get_up_early in/on/at/with,morning and,present to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh see/lo/see! going_out the,water,to and,say to=him/it thus he/it_had_said YHWH let_~_go people,my and,worship,me )

This refers to Aaron’s staff. See note in the introduction to chapter 8 regarding the hand and staff.

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

לְכִנִּ֖ם

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Mosheh get_up_early in/on/at/with,morning and,present to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Farˊoh see/lo/see! going_out the,water,to and,say to=him/it thus he/it_had_said YHWH let_~_go people,my and,worship,me )

We do not know exactly what this word means. It is probably a tiny (as in dust-particle size), biting insect. You should choose a different insect here than the one in the next plague (8:21-8:31).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:16-19 The third plague was the plague of gnats. The word translated “gnats” is very general. Technical Old Testament dictionaries often translate it as “vermin.” The English term “bugs” would come close. The whole land was infested with insects of one sort or another.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
