8:24 Note: KJB: Exod.8.28

OET (OET-RV)So Yahweh did what he’d said and a heavy swarm came to Far’oh’s house and the houses of his servants and all the Egyptians—the country was ruined by the arrival of the swarm.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהוָה֙ כֵּ֔ן

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

The UST supplies a brief sentence filling in the gap between Yahweh’s command to Moses and the onset of the plague. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express that explicitly to make the progression of events clear. Alternate translation: “Moses obeyed the instructions Yahweh gave him, and Pharaoh responded as Yahweh had said he would. And Yahweh did so”

Note 2 topic: writing-newevent

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהוָה֙ כֵּ֔ן

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

There is a minor scene change here. Use the natural form in your language for introducing a new event.

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

עָרֹ֣ב

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

There are probably the common large flies that bother humans and livestock. See how you translated this in 8:21

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / go

וַיָּבֹא֙

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

Some languages may need to translate this as “going” rather than “coming.” Alternate translation: “and … went”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

בֵּ֥יתָה פַרְעֹ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית עֲבָדָ֑יו

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

This means “to everyone everywhere” (in Egypt), as made explicit in the next statement. This makes clear that the insects were throughout the land. You should translate this in such a way that it does not convey limitation to these specifics but is understood to imply universality.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

תִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֥י הֶעָרֹֽב

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “The swarms of flies devastated the land”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מִפְּנֵ֥י הֶעָרֹֽב

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Farˊoh I let_~_go DOM,you_all and,sacrifice to/for=YHWH God,your_all's in/on/at/with,wilderness only to_go_far not you_all_must_go_far to=go pray for,me )

Here, face represents the presence of the insects. Alternate translation: “because the insects were everywhere”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:20-32 The fourth plague was the plague of flies. The Egyptians worshiped insects such as flies that seemed to be able to turn death into life, as their young seemed to emerge from decaying matter. If the Egyptians thought that insects had the secret of life, God would let them have all the insects they wanted. Some say that this infestation was the natural result of all the dead frogs, but there were no flies in Goshen (8:22), the northeastern delta area where the Hebrews lived. God’s miraculous power was clearly seen in his ability to infest one area while sparing another at will.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
