OET (OET-RV) But his father pushed back, “I know, my son, I know. Manasseh will also become a people, and he will also be great. Nevertheless his younger brother will be the greater one, and his descendants will become a multitude of nations.”

uW Translation Notes:

וַיְמָאֵ֣ן אָבִ֗יו

and,refused his/its=father

Alternate translation: “But his father refused to move his hands”

יָדַ֤עְתִּֽי בְנִי֙ יָדַ֔עְתִּי

I_know son,my I_know

Alternate translation: “I know it my son, I know what I am doing.” or “I know what I am doing, my son.”

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

גַּם ה֥וּא יִֽהְיֶה לְּעָ֖ם וְגַם ה֣וּא יִגְדָּ֑ל

also/yet he/it will_belong as,people and=also he/it great

Consider what is the best way in your language to refer to Joseph’s firstborn in these two clauses. Alternate translation: “In fact, the descendants of your firstborn son will also become a ethnic group, and he will be a great man.” or “In fact, your firstborn son will also be a important man, and he will be the ancestor of a people group.”

וְאוּלָ֗ם אָחִ֤יו הַקָּטֹן֙ יִגְדַּ֣ל מִמֶּ֔נּוּ

and,nevertheless his/its=woman the=small(sg) greater from=him/it

Alternate translation: “However, his younger brother Ephraim will be even greater than he will be,”

וְזַרְע֖וֹ

and,offspring,his

Make sure that your translation of this phrase refers to Ephraim’s descendants, not Manasseh’s. Alternate translation: “with many descendants, who”

יִהְיֶ֥ה מְלֹֽא הַגּוֹיִֽם

will_belong multitude the=nations

Compare how you translated a similar phrase (“a community of peoples”) in verse 4. Alternate translation: “will become many ethnic groups.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

48:1-22 In blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, Jacob reached out by faith for the promise to be continued, having learned that God’s ways are not always the ways of men. Out of Jacob’s long life, the writer to the Hebrews selected the blessing of Joseph’s sons as his great act of faith (Heb 11:21). As Jacob acted in light of God’s will, the primary blessing was again given to the younger instead of the older son, but without scheming and its bitter results.
