uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף וַיֹּאמַ֑ר

and=he/it_blessed DOM Yōşēf/(Joseph) (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_blessed DOM Yōşēf/(Joseph) and,he_said the=ʼElohīm which/who walked fathers_of,my before,,him ʼAⱱrāhām and,Isaac the=ʼElohīm [who],shepherded DOM=me from,my,duration until the=day (the),this )

By he blessed Joseph, the author means Israel blessed Joseph by blessing Joseph’s sons ([verses 15–16](../48/15.md), [19–20](../48/19.md)). You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Then Israel blessed Joseph by blessing his sons and saying]

Note 2 topic: translate-blessing

הָֽאֱלֹהִ֡ים

the=ʼElohīm

Jacob is asking God to bless the his son Joseph. In your translation, use a form that people would recognize as a blessing in your language. You might express this as a prayer if that would be more natural in your language. Consider whether or not it is better in your language to break up the long sentence in [verses 15–16](../48/15.md) into shorter sentences. Alternate translation: [May God bless your sons, the God] or [I ask God to bless your sons. He is the God]

אֲשֶׁר֩ & אֲבֹתַ֤י & אַבְרָהָ֣ם וְיִצְחָ֔ק

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_blessed DOM Yōşēf/(Joseph) and,he_said the=ʼElohīm which/who walked fathers_of,my before,,him ʼAⱱrāhām and,Isaac the=ʼElohīm [who],shepherded DOM=me from,my,duration until the=day (the),this )

Alternate translation: [whom my forefathers Abraham and Isaac]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הִתְהַלְּכ֨וּ & לְפָנָיו֙

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_blessed DOM Yōşēf/(Joseph) and,he_said the=ʼElohīm which/who walked fathers_of,my before,,him ʼAⱱrāhām and,Isaac the=ʼElohīm [who],shepherded DOM=me from,my,duration until the=day (the),this )

See how you translated the idiom “walk/live before” in Genesis [17:1](../17/01.md) and [24:40](../24/40.md). You may need to translate it differently in different contexts. Alternate translation: [walked with according to his will] or [lived obediently in the presence of] or [obeyed]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ הָרֹעֶ֣ה אֹתִ֔י

the=ʼElohīm [who],shepherded DOM=me

The word shepherding includes guiding, protecting, and providing food and water, such as a shepherd would do for his sheep. Here it is used as a image that refers to God’s complete care of Israel throughout his life. Consider whether or not it is best in your language to use a similar image here. Alternate translation: [the same God who has watched over me]

מֵעוֹדִ֖י עַד־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה

from,my,duration until the=day (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_blessed DOM Yōşēf/(Joseph) and,he_said the=ʼElohīm which/who walked fathers_of,my before,,him ʼAⱱrāhām and,Isaac the=ʼElohīm [who],shepherded DOM=me from,my,duration until the=day (the),this )

Alternate translation: [from the beginning of my life until the present day]
