uW Translation Notes:

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יוֹסֵף֙ אֶל אָבִ֔יו

and=he/it_said Yōşēf/(Joseph) to/towards his/its=father

Alternate translation: “Joseph said to him,” or “Joseph replied”

בָּנַ֣י הֵ֔ם אֲשֶׁר נָֽתַן לִ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים

sons,my they which/who he/it_gave to=me ʼElohīm

Alternate translation: “They are my sons whom God gave to me”

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר

and,said

Make sure it is clear in your translation who is speaking here. Alternate translation: “Then Israel said to him,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

קָֽחֶם נָ֥א אֵלַ֖י

bring,them now to=me

Some languages have a dual pronoun that works well to refer to Joseph’s two sons here (and throughout chapter 48). Do what is best in your language.

וַאֲבָרֲכֵֽם

and,bless,them

Alternate translation: “so that I can ask God to prosper them.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

48:1-22 In blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, Jacob reached out by faith for the promise to be continued, having learned that God’s ways are not always the ways of men. Out of Jacob’s long life, the writer to the Hebrews selected the blessing of Joseph’s sons as his great act of faith (Heb 11:21). As Jacob acted in light of God’s will, the primary blessing was again given to the younger instead of the older son, but without scheming and its bitter results.
