Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

Paragraph 25:4–5

Both verses of this proverb state that something undesirable must be removed in order to achieve the desired result. The first verse illustrates this principle by describing the process of refining silver. The second verse applies the principle to a king’s ability to rule righteously. The second verse is the main topic of the proverb.

25:5a

Remove the wicked from the king’s presence,

Remove the wicked from the king’s presence: Verse 25:5 is the topic of the comparison in 25:4a–b. It may be helpful to make this clear by introducing the command in 25:5a with a word or phrase such as:

This is a command to remove wicked, corrupt officials from the king’s court. The command describes a condition that must be fulfilled in order for a king to rule righteously. As in 25:4a, the command is not directed to a specific individual. The one who removes the wicked could be the king himself or a high official whom the king trusts. If possible, translate in way that allows either option.

Remove: This command does not specify how the wicked advisers will be removed. Perhaps they will be fired or forced to resign. The main idea is that they will no longer be able to give the king bad advice.McKane (page 591), Cohen (page 167).

25:5b

and his throne will be established in righteousness.

and his throne will be established in righteousness: This line means that the king will remain in power because of the righteous way that he rules. Since there are no corrupt officials in his government, he will make good decisions that are fair to everyone.UBS (page 543). As a result, his kingdom will be strong, stable, and long-lasting.

throne: This is a figure of speech. The king’s throne represents his rule or government.

In this verse, Solomon is comparing what follows to what he said in the previous verse. In the same way that “dross” must be removed from silver in order to make a vessel, a wicked one must be removed from before the face of the king in order for that king’s throne to be established. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: “Similarly, remove” or “So also remove”
