The term spade refers to a digging tool. In this context, it may have been a small shovel or simply a stick that soldiers would carry with them to dig holes and cover their excrement. If your readers would not be familiar with this kind of tool, you could use the name of a similar tool that your readers would recognize, or you could use a more general term. Moses is referring to defecating in a polite way by using the phrase sitting yourself out. Depending on what is helpful in your language, you could use a polite way of referring to this in your language, or you could state this plainly. Alternate translation: [when you relieve yourself] or [when you go to attend to your needs]
