ULT And they will spread them out to the sun and to the moon and to all of the armies of the heavens that they loved them and that they served them, and that they walked after them and that they sought them, and that they bowed down to them. They will not be gathered, and they will not be buried again. They will be for dung on the face of the land.

UST They will take out their bones from their graves and dishonor them by scattering them on the ground under the sun and the moon and the stars—those are the gods which my people loved and served and worshiped. No one will gather up their bones and bury them again; they will remain scattered on the ground like dung.

BSB They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered up or buried, but will become like dung lying on the ground.

OEB and they shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they loved and served and followed and sought and worshipped; and they shall remain ungathered and unburied, they shall be for dung on the face of the ground.

WEB They will spread them before the sun, the moon, and all the army of the sky, which they have loved, which they have served, after which they have walked, which they have sought, and which they have worshiped. They will not be gathered or be buried. They will be like dung on the surface of the earth.

NET They will be spread out and exposed to the sun, the moon and the stars. These are things they adored and served, things to which they paid allegiance, from which they sought guidance, and worshiped. The bones of these people will never be regathered and reburied. They will be like manure used to fertilize the ground.

LSV And have spread them to sun, and to moon,
And to all the host of the heavens, that they have loved,
And that they have served,
And that they have walked after,
And that they have sought,
And to which they have bowed themselves,
They are not gathered, nor buried,
They are for dung on the face of the ground.

FBV They will lie exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the stars which they loved, which they served, which they followed, which they consulted, and which they worshiped.[fn] Their bones will not be collected or reburied, but will be left like manure lying on the ground.

8:2 The repetition emphasizes the inability of these “gods” to do anything to protect even the bones of their worshipers.

T4T They will take out their bones from their graves and dishonor them by scattering them on the ground under the sun and the moon and the stars—
⇔ those are the gods which my people loved and served and worshiped.
 ⇔ No one will gather up their bones and bury them again;
⇔ they will remain scattered on the ground like dung.

LEB And they shall spread them out before the sun, and before the moon, and before all the host of heaven, which they have loved, and which they have served, and which they have gone after, and which they have inquired about, and to which they have bowed in worship. They shall not be gathered, and they shall not be buried; they will be like dung on the surface of the ground.

BBE And they will put them out before the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, whose lovers and servants they have been, after whom they have gone, to whom they have made prayers, and to whom they have given worship: they will not be put together or placed in the earth; they will be waste on the face of the earth.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:1-2 Scattering the bones of the dead was the ultimate act of contempt for a defeated nation. Jerusalem’s favorite pagan deities—the sun, moon, and stars—would be unable to prevent it from happening.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) will spread them out

(Some words not found in UHB: and,exposed,they to_the,sun and,before_the,moon and=to/for=all host the=heavens which/who loved,them and=which served,them and,which gone after,them and=which consulted,them and=which worshiped to/for=them not gathered and=not buried like,dung on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in face/surface_of the=soil be )

The word “them” refers to the bones of the people listed in the previous verse.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) that they have followed and served, that they have walked after and sought, and that they have worshiped

The word “they” here refers to the people of Judah. These three phrases mean about the same thing and are repeated for emphasis.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) walked after

(Some words not found in UHB: and,exposed,they to_the,sun and,before_the,moon and=to/for=all host the=heavens which/who loved,them and=which served,them and,which gone after,them and=which consulted,them and=which worshiped to/for=them not gathered and=not buried like,dung on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in face/surface_of the=soil be )

This is a metaphor for serving or worshiping. See how you translated this in Jeremiah 2:23.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) The bones will not be gathered or buried again

(Some words not found in UHB: and,exposed,they to_the,sun and,before_the,moon and=to/for=all host the=heavens which/who loved,them and=which served,them and,which gone after,them and=which consulted,them and=which worshiped to/for=them not gathered and=not buried like,dung on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in face/surface_of the=soil be )

This can be expressed in active form. Alternate translation: “No one will gather their bones or bury them again”

(Occurrence 0) on the surface of the earth

(Some words not found in UHB: and,exposed,they to_the,sun and,before_the,moon and=to/for=all host the=heavens which/who loved,them and=which served,them and,which gone after,them and=which consulted,them and=which worshiped to/for=them not gathered and=not buried like,dung on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in face/surface_of the=soil be )

Alternate translation: “all over the ground”
