OET (OET-LV) for_so/thus/hence thus he_says my_master YHWH HERE servants_of_my they_will_eat and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_hungry HERE servants_of_my they_will_drink and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_thirsty HERE servants_of_my they_will_rejoice and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_ashamed.
OET (OET-RV) So my master, Yahweh, says this:
⇔ Listen, my servants will eat, but you’ll all be hungry.
⇔ ≈ Look, my servants will drink, but you’ll all be thirsty.
⇔ ≈ Watch, my servants will celebrate, but you’ll all be put to shame.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
לָכֵ֞ן
for=so/thus/hence
The word Therefore indicates that what follows is a result of what Yahweh said before it. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a result of what came before. Alternate translation: [Because you did those things]
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
הִנֵּ֨ה עֲבָדַ֤י יֹאכֵ֨לוּ֙ וְאַתֶּ֣ם תִּרְעָ֔בוּ הִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדַ֛י & יִשְׁתּ֖וּ וְאַתֶּ֣ם & תִּצְמָ֑אוּ הִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדַ֛י & יִשְׂמָ֖חוּ וְאַתֶּ֥ם & תֵּבֹֽשׁוּ
(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD see/lo/see! servants_of,my eat and,you(pl) hungry see/lo/see! servants_of,my drink and,you(pl) thirsty see/lo/see! servants_of,my rejoice and,you(pl) put_to_shame )
The pronoun you is stated separately here even though the verbs translated as you will hunger, you will thirst, and you will have shame already include this meaning. Yahweh is doing that in each of these three statements to emphasize the contrast between what will happen to his servants and what will happen to the people he is addressing. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. Alternate translation: [Behold, my servants will eat, but as for you, you will surely hunger. Behold, my servants will drink, but as for you, you will surely thirst. Behold, my servants will rejoice, but as for you, you will surely be ashamed]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
These three clauses mean basically the same thing. The second and third emphasize the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Another approach would be to connect the phrases with a word that shows that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. See how you as a team have decided to translate the parallel phrases in poetry, and follow that approach here and throughout this chapter. Alternate translation: [Behold, I will give my servants plenty to eat and drink and reason to rejoice, but you will suffer hunger, thirst, and shame]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
תֵּבֹֽשׁוּ
put_to_shame
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of shame, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [you will be ashamed]
Note 5 topic: writing-foreground
הִנֵּ֨ה & הִנֵּ֧ה & הִנֵּ֧ה
see/lo/see! & see/lo/see! & see/lo/see!
Yahweh uses the term Behold three times to focus his listeners’ attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation. Alternate translation: [Hear me]
OET (OET-LV) for_so/thus/hence thus he_says my_master YHWH HERE servants_of_my they_will_eat and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_hungry HERE servants_of_my they_will_drink and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_thirsty HERE servants_of_my they_will_rejoice and_you(pl) you(pl)_will_be_ashamed.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
