Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
καὶ ἐγένετο
and ˱it˲_became
Here, the phrase And it happened that introduces something that happened soon after what Matthew previously narrated. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces an event that came soon after the previous event. Alternate translation: [Soon after that,]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἀνακειμένου
reclining
In Jesus’ culture, people would usually recline, or lay on one side, when they were eating. If it would be helpful in your language, you could refer to the position in which people eat in your culture, or you could just refer to eating. Alternate translation: [was sitting down to eat] or [was eating]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τῇ οἰκίᾳ
the house
Here it is implied that this is Matthew’s house. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Matthew’s house]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclamations
ἰδοὺ
behold
Here, the word behold draws the attention of the audience and asks them to listen carefully. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express behold with a word or phrase that asks the audience to listen, or you could draw the audience’s attention in another way. Alternate translation: [as it happened] or [notice]
9:10 The Jewish people despised Jewish tax collectors (5:46-47; 18:15-20), who cooperated with Roman oppressors and were considered betrayers of the Israelite nation. Many also considered them unclean because of their frequent contact with Gentiles and because of the idolatrous images on Roman coins. Tax-collection was a private enterprise. In each district, Rome granted the right to collect taxes to the highest bidder (cp. Luke 19:1-10). Anything collected above the bid was profit for the collectors, who, driven by greed, often used extortion.
OET (OET-LV) And it_became of_him reclining in the house, and see, many tax_collectors and sinners having_come were_reclining the with_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) and the apprentices/followers of_him.
OET (OET-RV) Later when Yeshua was eating at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came in and sat at the table together with Yeshua and his disciples.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
