uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה

and,Samuel ministering DOM face/surface_of YHWH

See the discussion in the Introduction to this chapter of why the author may say at here rather than “to.” Alternate translation: [But Samuel was serving Yahweh devotedly]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד

wearing ephod_of linen

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [who was wearing an ephod of linen]

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד

wearing ephod_of linen

Wearing an ephod was a symbolic action that showed Samuel was serving as a priest. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: [wearing a priestly garment made of linen]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:18 The clause Samuel . . . served the Lord describes the ritual service of Levites and priests (see, e.g., Num 3:4; 8:19, 24; Deut 18:7). Like Eli’s sons, Samuel was a Levite (see study note on 1 Sam 1:1). But unlike Eli’s sons, he lived up to his calling.
• He wore a linen garment like that of a priest, as did the priests who ministered in the sanctuary (see study note on 22:18).
