uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

Hannah continues to recite a song to Yahweh.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) guard the feet of his faithful people

(Some words not found in UHB: feet faithful, his guard and, wicked in/on/at/with,darkness silenced that/for/because/then/when not in/on/at/with,might prevail (a)_man )

Here “feet” is a metonym for the way a person walks, which in turn is a metaphor for the way a person decides how to live his life. Alternate translation: “keep his faithful people from making foolish decisions” or “enable his faithful people to make wise decisions” (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

(Occurrence 0) the wicked will be put to silence in darkness

(Some words not found in UHB: feet faithful, his guard and, wicked in/on/at/with,darkness silenced that/for/because/then/when not in/on/at/with,might prevail (a)_man )

This polite way of saying that Yahweh will kill the wicked can be stated in active form. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will put the wicked to silence in darkness” or “Yahweh will put the wicked in the dark and silent world of the dead”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) the wicked will be put to silence

(Some words not found in UHB: feet faithful, his guard and, wicked in/on/at/with,darkness silenced that/for/because/then/when not in/on/at/with,might prevail (a)_man )

The words “be put to silence” are an idiom for “be made silent.” If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will make them silent” (See also: figs-activepassive)

(Occurrence 0) by strength

(Some words not found in UHB: feet faithful, his guard and, wicked in/on/at/with,darkness silenced that/for/because/then/when not in/on/at/with,might prevail (a)_man )

Alternate translation: “because he is strong”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:1-10 Hannah’s Prayer of Praise celebrates Samuel’s dedication to the Lord’s service by rejoicing in God’s uniqueness (2:1-2), his ability to reverse fortunes (2:3-9), and his ability to strengthen his chosen king (2:10). Like Mary’s Song of Praise (Luke 1:46-55), Hannah’s prayer emphasizes God bringing down the rich and powerful and exalting the poor and the downtrodden (1 Sam 2:7-8; Luke 1:52-53). David’s prayer in 2 Sam 22 is another beautiful proclamation of God’s saving power as it relates to his chosen king (1 Sam 2:10). The rich, unrighteous rulers of the land (Eli, Saul, Herod) will be brought down, while the leaders who fulfill God’s purposes (Samuel, David, Jesus) will be exalted.
