19.4 Joannes baptizavit. BED. Baptizati a Juda non rebaptizantur, quia in fide Trinitatis; sed baptizati a Joanne, quia Joannes in aqua tantum at Christus in Spiritu sancto baptizat. Cum ergo bonus vel malus minister baptizat, si plena est Trinitatis fides, Dominus baptizat; in aqua vero sola a Joanne baptizati, a Paulo sunt baptizati. BED. Quæstio est, utrum ille qui per ignorantiam forte a non baptizato, sed tamen rectæ fidei baptizatus est debeat rebaptizari? Quam hoc capitulo expositam reor. Quid enim differt, an tunc ante initium baptismi Christi, an nunc a quopiam sine susceptione ejusdem quisquam baptizaretur? cum quos Joannes in fide et nomine Christi venturi baptizavit, iterum baptizandos prædicavit, dicens: Ego baptizo in aqua, ille baptizabit in Spiritu sancto.

19.4 Yoannes baptizavit. BED. Non sins Yoannes his_own baptismate remisit, but pœnitentiam docuit. Nam like circumcisio in patriarchis signaculum of_faith how habebant fuit. ita and this lavacrum populus pœnitens as_if signaculum suæ devotionis accepit: that of_Christ baptisma, in quo fit remissio, figurabat. RAB. Non it_is baptisma, that not/no datur in nomine Trinitatis. Baptizati from Yuda not/no rebaptizantur, because in fide Trinitatis; but baptizati from Yoanne, because Yoannes in water only at Christus in Spiritu sancto baptizat. Since therefore bonus or malus minister baptizat, when/but_if plena it_is Trinitatis fides, Master baptizat; in water vero sola from Yoanne baptizati, from Paulo are baptizati. BED. Quæstio it_is, utrum ille who through ignorantiam forte from not/no baptizato, but tamen rectæ of_faith baptizatus it_is debeat rebaptizari? Quam this capitulo expositam reor. Quid because differt, an tunc before the_beginning baptismi of_Christ, an now from quopiam without susceptione hisdem quisquam baptizaretur? when/with which Yoannes in fide and nomine of_Christ venturi baptizavit, again baptizandos prædicavit, saying: I baptizo in water, ille baptizabit in Spiritu sancto.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

19:1-7 Paul traveled to Ephesus after Apollos had left. Subsequently, Apollos returned to Ephesus while Paul was still working there (1 Cor 16:12). The two men had different personalities, gifts, and roles, but God worked through both of them.
• Some believers in Ephesus still had an inadequate understanding of the Christian faith (cp. Acts 18:26) and did not receive the Holy Spirit when they believed. They had accepted John’s baptism, which called for repentance from sin, but had not received Christian baptism, which included the gift of the Holy Spirit. When Paul had instructed them further, they were able to receive Christian baptism (19:5) and the Holy Spirit (19:6).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Ἰωάννης ἐβάπτισεν βάπτισμα

John baptized ˱with˲_/a/_baptism

Paul is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. Your language may be able to do the same. But if that would sound unnatural in your language, you could express the meaning another way. Alternate translation: “John performed a baptism”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

βάπτισμα μετανοίας

˱with˲_/a/_baptism ˱of˲_repentance

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of repentance, you could express the same idea with the verb “repent.” Alternate translation: “a baptism that people requested when they wanted to repent”
