TSNTyndale Study Notes:

36:16-38 Ezekiel reminded his hearers of their guilt and their need for God to change their hearts. In the future, God would cleanse his people.
• Objects and people are divided in the Old Testament into the categories of “clean” and “unclean,” “sacred” and “profane” (see “Clean, Unclean, and Holy” Theme Note). God had made Israel clean, while the Gentile nations had remained unclean. Then Israel as a nation became unclean because of their bloodshed and idolatry, which defiled the land. Because they behaved like the unclean nations, Israel’s punishment of being scattered among the nations was fitting. In the future, God would make them clean so that he could dwell among them again. The other nations, seeing his holiness in his people, would once again know that he is the Holy One. In the New Testament, God’s redemption through Christ redraws the lines between clean and unclean (see Acts 10:15). The Gentiles are no longer outside of God’s grace; they too can receive the Holy Spirit and become clean. Jews and Gentiles together now make up the one people of God in Christ. Those who are in Christ Jesus are not only clean, but also holy by virtue of his priesthood. Therefore, they are able to come boldly into God’s presence and experience his grace (Heb 12:18-29).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) Like the flock is set apart for sacrifices, like the flock in Jerusalem at her appointed feasts

(Some words not found in UHB: like,flock sacrifices like,flock Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,appointed_feasts,her yes/correct/thus/so be the,cities the,ruined filled_with flock_of_sheep/goats humankind and,know that/for/because/then/when I YHWH )

The phrase “is set apart” can be stated in active form. Alternate translation: “Like the great number of sheep that the people set apart for sacrifices or bring to Jerusalem for the appointed feasts”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) so will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people

(Some words not found in UHB: like,flock sacrifices like,flock Yerushalayim in/on/at/with,appointed_feasts,her yes/correct/thus/so be the,cities the,ruined filled_with flock_of_sheep/goats humankind and,know that/for/because/then/when I YHWH )

This speaks of the people of Israel as if they were a flock of sheep. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “so will the great number of people be who will be living in the cities that are now ruined but the people will rebuild” (See also: figs-activepassive)
